Indonesia’s Strong Commitment to Develop the Electric Vehicle Ecosystem in ASEAN

Jakarta — A strong commitment was really expressed by Indonesia in developing the electric vehicle ecosystem in ASEAN.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Menlu RI), Retno Marsudi said that strengthening energy security such as building an electric vehicle ecosystem was indeed a priority discussion for Indonesia’s chairmanship at the 2023 ASEAN Summit.

It’s not only Indonesia that continues to push for electrical energy security, but regional countries have also agreed on the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.

Everything will really be realized at the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo in May 2023.

“And this will be ratified at the 42nd Summit in May,” said the Foreign Minister.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s seriousness in continuing to encourage the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem is increasingly being pursued.

Presidential Chief of Staff, Moeldoko held a meeting with representatives of the Asian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (AFEVA) and discussed this matter.

According to him, the use of two-wheeled vehicles in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia is very massive, so it is indeed very important to develop electric vehicles, especially for two-wheeled vehicles.

“Production of two-wheeled motorized vehicles in Indonesia reaches 6 to 7 million per year. Even in Southeast Asian countries, the use of two-wheeled vehicles is very massive,” he said.

“So this Association Federation needs to think about how to develop the electric vehicle ecosystem, especially in the two-wheeled vehicle sector,” added Moeldoko.

It should also be noted that there has been an agreement that the Association of Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industries (Periklindo) will become part of AFEVA, joining associations of electric vehicles from other Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

Moeldoko believes that the joining of Periklindo will be able to bring Indonesia to become one of the leading countries producing electric vehicles in the Asian region.

The Indonesian government itself also has a strong commitment to a sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation system.

“It is hoped that the electric vehicle industries in this Asian federation will also influence the formulation of national policies in the future that will further support the development of the domestic electric vehicle ecosystem,” said Moeldoko.

On another occasion, Indonesia established a strategic partnership with the Philippines to build a sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem in ASEAN.

Arsjad Rasjid as the head of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) stated that Indonesia and the Philippines continue to be able to encourage sustainable economic growth in regional countries.

Indonesia itself emphasizes that downstream is very important because of this nation’s success in developing the electric vehicle and battery industries.

This is because Indonesia has recorded achievements with exports of nickel in the form of iron and steel, nickel matte and mixed hydrate precipitate with a value of up to 20 million USD.

“Indonesia’s success in the electric vehicle and battery industry can be attributed to the important downstream role that enables the development of a strong ecosystem in the sector,” explained Arsjad.

“By sharing our experience with the Philippines, we hope to strengthen the partnership between our countries and promote sustainable economic growth in the region,” added Arsjad.
