Military Court Demonstrates Firm and Transparent Stance in Acid Attack Case
By: Raka Bintang Prasetyo
The commitment to firm and transparent law enforcement has once again come into public focus following the acid attack against KontraS Deputy Coordinator, Andrie Yunus. The case is currently being handled seriously by law enforcement authorities, including the military court, which has shown strong determination to thoroughly investigate the matter without discrimination. This step reaffirms that the rule of law remains the primary foundation in upholding justice within society.
President Prabowo Subianto directly emphasized that the case must not stop at the perpetrators on the ground. He called for the legal process to trace all the way to those suspected of being the masterminds behind the incident. This stance demonstrates that the state provides no room for impunity in any form. The President also described acid attacks as a grave crime, not only causing physical harm to the victim but also instilling fear across the wider community.
The President’s statement reflects the government’s firm position in ensuring that every legal violation—especially those involving brutality—must be handled comprehensively and without compromise. Consistent law enforcement is essential in maintaining public trust in state institutions, particularly when cases involve suspected perpetrators from within the security apparatus.
In the course of the investigation, the Head of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) Information Center, Major General Aulia Dwi Nasrullah, announced that four individuals suspected of involvement have been formally named as suspects. They have been held in a high-security military detention facility since March 18, 2026. The charges brought against them relate to aggravated assault, and the legal process is ongoing in accordance with applicable regulations.
Investigators have also attempted to obtain testimony from the victim. However, Andrie Yunus’ medical condition has posed challenges, preventing direct examination thus far. In response, coordination has been carried out with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency, which has provided protection to the victim. This reflects that victim protection remains a priority throughout the legal process.
The case has drawn particular attention as it involves active military personnel. Four members assigned to the Headquarters Detachment of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (Denma BAIS TNI) are strongly suspected of being involved in the incident, which took place in Senen, Central Jakarta, after the victim had completed activities at the YLBHI office. All suspects are currently detained at the TNI Military Police Center to undergo further legal proceedings in accordance with military judicial mechanisms.
The victim’s condition has been reported as serious, with approximately 20 percent burns to the body and severe chemical trauma to the right eye. This situation further underscores the urgency of handling the case swiftly, accurately, and fairly, considering the physical and psychological impacts involved.
As a form of institutional accountability, the Head of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency, Lieutenant General Yudi Abdimantyo, has stepped down from his position. This move is seen as part of efforts to maintain institutional credibility and integrity amid public scrutiny. Although further details regarding his dismissal status or successor have not been disclosed, the decision reflects an awareness of the importance of accountability within state institutions.
Support has also come from the legislative branch. Deputy Chair of Commission I of the House of Representatives, Dave Laksono, stated that the case must be handled seriously as it relates to democratic values and human rights. This view reinforces the importance of a transparent and accountable legal process and highlights synergy among state institutions in overseeing law enforcement.
The military judiciary has a track record of imposing firm sanctions on violations committed by military personnel. These sanctions may include not only criminal penalties but also dismissal and demotion. This demonstrates that the military legal system possesses comprehensive mechanisms to uphold discipline and institutional integrity.
Transparency in court proceedings is also a crucial factor in maintaining public trust. Military trials are, in principle, conducted openly, allowing the public to monitor the legal process. This openness serves as an indicator that law enforcement is not carried out behind closed doors, but rather under broad public oversight.
In a broader context, the government’s firm handling of this case aligns with various achievements over the past year. The administration has been regarded as successful in strengthening national security stability, enhancing coordination among law enforcement agencies, and promoting more transparent and accountable bureaucratic reforms. These efforts contribute to reinforcing the national legal system to be more responsive to evolving cases within society.
Ultimately, the handling of the acid attack against Andrie Yunus is not only a test for law enforcement authorities but also a moment to demonstrate that the state is present in protecting its citizens. Consistency in firm and transparent law enforcement must be maintained to preserve public trust.
In conclusion, all elements of society are expected to oversee the ongoing legal process. Fair and non-discriminatory law enforcement is a crucial foundation for building a safe and civilized Indonesia. With collective commitment, it is hoped that all forms of violence can be addressed decisively, ensuring that humanitarian values remain upheld in national life.
