Creating Peaceful 2024 Elections, KPU: The Importance of Literacy to Fight Political Hoaxes
Jakarta — KPU commissioner, Idham Holik explained that it is very important for the public to have literacy and knowledge to fight hoaxes ahead of the 2024 Election.
How could it not be, because the spread of fake news or hoaxes is often absorbed by people who lack knowledge.
“The key is having knowledge because often these hoaxes are unknowingly received by parties who do not have knowledge regarding matters discussed outside the public,” he said.
Meanwhile, according to him, for people who have a good level of literacy, they will tend to be more careful and not easily carried away.
“The most important thing is that we all have good literacy, we have to be vigilant, we have to be careful not to get carried away,” said Idham.
According to the KPU Commissioner, another way to minimize the spread of fake news on social media is to choose verified friends.
The reason is, it cannot be denied that there are certain accounts on social media that continue to spread hoax propaganda about the 2024 Election.
“I invite Indonesian voters to build friendships on social media where friends are verified, if it’s not clear, then just cut them off because it can be used as propaganda to spread lies,” he said.
Early mitigation efforts, namely increasing literacy and filtering friendships more, are a careful way of using social media.
“We mitigate it from an early age by carefully using social media ethically using social media,” said Idham.
According to him, it is very important that the whole community strives to create healthy and peaceful political conditions.
With vigilance in using social media, exposure to hoaxes will certainly not easily affect someone, because this is very detrimental to the health of democracy.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD emphasized that hoaxes are a very real disturbance.
“Therefore, be careful, don’t play with hoaxes. It’s a distraction,” he said.
Mahfud also gave an example of one of the fake news that is still being discussed by the public, namely the issue of postponing the election.
He reiterated that there was absolutely no delay in the democratic party, because all matters regarding the General Election had been prepared by the Government.
“No extension, no delay. That is what the Government has shown with all the instruments prepared, and I am one of those who is responsible for the election being carried out properly,” said the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs.
