Public Political Awareness in the 2024 Regional Elections Improves the Quality of Local Democracy
Public political awareness in the 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) is a way to strengthen local democracy in various regions. Various initiatives, including political socialization and education, have been held by local governments to encourage active community participation in determining their regional leaders.
In this regard, the Acting Regent of Penajam Paser Utara (PPU), East Kalimantan, Muhammad Zainal Arifin, stated that public participation is the main pillar of democracy.
“Democracy is a priceless gift. Active participation of the community, especially in the General Election and Regional Election, is our opportunity to determine the direction of regional development through trustworthy and competent leaders,” said Zainal Arifin.
Zainal also emphasized the importance of the role of the younger generation in driving regional change, encouraging them to be actively involved and seek information about relevant political issues.
Likewise, the Jepara Regency General Election Commission (KPU) continues to strive to increase public awareness in exercising their voting rights. This was conveyed by Jepara KPU Commissioner, Muhammadun.
“We are committed to encouraging public participation in every stage of the election. Public awareness to attend Polling Stations (TPS) is increasing. Previous election data shows that voter participation increased from 83 percent in 2019 to 85 percent in 2024. This is a positive indicator that citizens are increasingly aware of the importance of their voices in the democratic process,” he said.
Muhammadun also emphasized that the presence of citizens during the regional elections is not only a right, but also an important step in determining the future of the region.
“Every vote has a big meaning and influence in choosing the right leader. We want the public to understand that elections are an important moment to convey their hopes and aspirations,” concluded Muhammadun.
Increasing voter participation through better political awareness is expected to create a democratic, safe, and dignified Pilkada. With continued socialization efforts, public participation in the 2024 Pilkada is believed to contribute significantly to the quality of better local democracy in Indonesia.
