Sekonyer River is damage, Border of Tanjung Putting National Park is Gray

CIDISS, Central Kalimantan – Tanjung Puting National Park is a national located in Kumai district, Kotawaringin Barat regency, Central Kalimantan province. Various flora and fauna live in there, including orangutan. Tanjung Putting National Park also becomes tourism spot and research activity.

The existence of Tanjung Putting National Park is influenced also by Sekonyer river which cross and become the water transportation from and to camp in Tanjung Putting National Park. But, mining in the Sekonyer River made the river damage.

Chief of National Park Management section Area I, Tanjung Putting National Park, Saut Manalu said, a hundred of river current of Sekonyer is damage. It caused the area cannot crossed by speed boat or boat.

“There are some spots damaging of Sekonyer River. The spots cannot be crossed by speed boat or boat. It’s so shallow. Now, the illegal mining is not in the land, but in the river,” said Saut Manalu.

Besides that Manalu explain, the damaging in the Sekonyer, made gray the border of Tanjung Putting National Park area. Sekonyer River is natural border which separate the area of Tanjung Putting National Park area and village.

Regarding the data from Orangutan Foundation International (OFI), damaging in Sekonyer River is in some spots. The worst spot is in Hampalam and Danau Kawah. The damaging river caused illegal mining made shallow and contamination (pollution).

Field Director OFI, Fajar Dewantoro, such quote in Borneonews said that there are some cases of trees’ stolen for making Lanting (house located upper of the river) and stick prop for mining tools.

“The damaging of river is also the reason for open the forest. There are some cases about wood stolen (trees) in Tanjung Putting National Park area. Kind of Tembaras and Idat. The tree is used for making Lanting (house located upper of the river) and stick for prop mining tools,” said Fajar Dewantoro.
