1 Million Barrel Oil Refinery Realizes Energy Self-Sufficiency GoalJakarta – The Indonesian government is committed to increasing the capacity of oil refineries to strengthen national energy security. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the construction of oil refineries with a capacity of 1 million barrels per day will be carried out in several strategic areas in Indonesia, including Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, and Maluku-Papua.
“We will build (an oil refinery) of approximately 1 million barrels, and we will do it in several places, both in Kalimantan, Java, Sulawesi, and Maluku-Papua so that there is equality,” he said. This step aims to create equality of development and strengthen national energy security by increasing domestic oil production capacity.
With the construction of new refineries spread across various regions, the government hopes to reduce dependence on energy imports and encourage energy self-sufficiency. This step is part of the government’s efforts to achieve sustainable energy security while supporting the country’s economy through the energy sector.
“The construction of this refinery is very important to realize national energy independence, as well as provide a positive impact on regional development,” added Bahlil.
In addition, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) also has an important role in ensuring the availability of national energy. PHE President Director, Dannif Danusaputro, emphasized the importance of exploring new areas as one of the strategies to increase oil and gas production.
“We are focusing on exploring new areas, including drilling in deepwater areas and targets that are deeper than conventional wells. This is a strategic step to ensure that energy reserves remain sufficient in the future,” he said.
PHE also continues to strive to improve production efficiency through Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology, which involves waterflood and steamflood methods to optimize production results from wells that have been operating for a long time.
With the achievement of oil production of 553.67 thousand barrels per day in January 2025 and ongoing drilling projects, PHE is committed to maintaining energy security and ensuring the availability of national energy sustainably. The company is also aggressively accelerating greenfield projects and reactivating wells that are not yet producing.
Through collaboration between the government and energy companies such as PHE, Indonesia is expected to achieve energy self-sufficiency and reduce dependence on energy imports in the future. “PHE strives to always support energy availability in an efficient and sustainable way for a better future,” Dannif concluded.
