Affordable Education Achieved Through People’s Schools

Jakarta – Efforts to provide decent and affordable education for all levels of society are now becoming more evident through the implementation of the People’s School program.
The Governor of East Java, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, directly reviewed the activities of the High School level People’s School at the State Civil Apparatus Competency Development Center (BPKASN), Tarokan District, Kediri Regency.
This program is a collaboration between the Ministry of Social Affairs, the East Java Provincial Government, and the Kediri Regency Government. The People’s School (SR) is intended for children from low-income families who fall into Decile 1 and Decile 2 categories based on the National Integrated Socioeconomic Data (DTSEN). At the former BPKASN Kediri site, 100 students, 40 boys and 60 girls, are participating in boarding school learning.
“It’s not just about 100 children, but about a great hope that everyone, regardless of background, has the right to a future,” said Governor Khofifah.
He emphasized that the existence of the People’s School is concrete evidence of the presence of the state for those who have faced limitations in obtaining quality education.
The facilities at SR BPKASN Kediri are comprehensive and modern. The four classrooms can accommodate up to 25 students each and are equipped with air conditioning. Additionally, other amenities include comfortable dormitories, a library, a spacious auditorium, a sports area, and a 24-hour CCTV surveillance system.
“You can see for yourself, the room is air-conditioned, and the bathroom is probably even nicer than mine,” said Khofifah.
Khofifah also proposed the addition of an English language learning program to the Regent of Kediri.
“For example, they’re required to use English on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Within six months, they’ll be fluent,” he said.
The curriculum implemented also combines academic aspects, character building, nationalism, digital literacy, and life skills.
“I believe that the People’s School will produce a generation that is not only intelligent, but also resilient and has a sense of identity. They will be drivers of change, bringing new hope,” said Khofifah.
Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka also expressed support for the People’s School. While visiting the Professor Doctor Soeharso Integrated Central People’s School in Surakarta, Central Java, some time ago, Gibran expressed his hope that the program’s scope would continue to expand.
“The goal is for more children to be able to enjoy quality and equal education,” read a statement from the Vice President’s Palace.
With full support from the central and regional governments and complete facilities provided, the People’s School is concrete evidence that inclusive and quality education is now truly being realized.**
