Military operations carried out by the TNI Habema Operations Command (Koops) in Sugapa District, Intan Jaya Regency, Central Papua, succeeded in suppressing the actions of the Free Papua Organization (OPM) led by Apeni Kobogau. This success not only marked victory in the battle, but also brought calm and a sense of security to local people who had long lived in fear.

The Joint Regional Defense Command III (Pangkopwilhan III) led by Lieutenant General TNI Richard TH Tampubolon announced through a release in Timika that OPM troops led by Apeni Kobogau carried out an attack at the end of May 2024 in Bazemba Village. This attack triggered a shooting that took place between the two sides.

OPM’s acts of terror not only targeted TNI soldiers, but also targeted civilians. According to Richard, TNI soldiers who were members of the TNI Habema Koops responded to attacks from the OPM, forcing them to retreat to Wandoge Village. The OPM’s obstruction and shooting of TNI soldiers who were moving towards Bazemba Village is clear evidence of how this group continues to disturb the peace and security of the area.

The OPM led by Apeni Kobogau has repeatedly committed criminal acts, such as confiscating people’s belongings, taking food and money by force, and committing abuse. These actions not only disturbed the community, but also created an atmosphere of fear that encouraged residents to report these incidents to the Habema TNI Koops in the hope of receiving protection.

Receiving reports from people who felt pressured and threatened, the Habema TNI Koops immediately took quick action by deploying soldiers to save the people in Sugapa District. The presence of the TNI provided a sense of security and eased the panic that hit residents due to OPM’s actions.

This quick and firm action from the TNI shows their commitment to protecting and serving the Papuan people who have been living in the shadow of terror. During this confrontation, three OPM members led by Apeni Kobogau were involved in a shootout with TNI troops until they finally fled and left Wandoga Village.

This success is a significant step in creating regional security and supporting accelerated development in Papua. The TNI is not only tasked with fighting the enemy, but also ensuring that people can live their lives safely and peacefully. Apart from military operations, efforts to increase the competency of health workers at Intan Jaya Regional Hospital are also in the spotlight. Intan Jaya Regional Hospital held Medical Emergency Training to improve the ability of health workers to handle medical emergency situations.

This training involved 18 health workers, including nurses, midwives and pharmacists, for two days on 5 and 7 June 2024 in Nabire. This training aims to strengthen the knowledge and skills of health workers in handling medical emergencies, covering various fields such as surgery, pediatrics and internal medicine.

Previously, Intan Jaya Regional Hospital also held Basic Trauma Cardiac Life Support (BTCLS) training in 2022 and basic training in saving lives from heart attacks in 2023. This training is expected to form a medical team that is ready and skilled in dealing with emergency situations.

The Director of RSUD Intan Jaya, Kristianus Tebai, emphasized the importance of this training to save patients from emergency conditions. All health workers at RSUD Intan Jaya need to continue to improve their knowledge and skills in providing emergency assistance.

According to Kristianus, this training is also in line with Law Number 23 of 1992 concerning Health, which states that everyone has the right to obtain optimal health services and that the government is obliged to provide equitable and affordable health services.

Head of the Nursing Section at RSUD Intan Jaya, Dorisma Manik, revealed that this training was very useful for improving health services in Intan Jaya. One of the speakers, dr. Amelia Kristin Simanjuntak, Sp.B, explained the importance of immediate action in emergency situations to avoid organ loss or life threats. He also encouraged training participants to continue to consult and help each other in health services at Intan Jaya Regional Hospital and Nabire Regional Hospital.

This training not only provides direct benefits in increasing the competency of health workers, but also contributes to improving the quality of health services in difficult areas such as Intan Jaya. By increasing this competency, it is hoped that health services in Intan Jaya will be better and able to provide fast and appropriate treatment in emergency situations.

The success of the TNI operation and increasing the competence of health workers in Intan Jaya are two sides of a major effort to bring Papua to a better condition. The TNI, with its courage and sacrifice, ensures that the Papuan people can live in peace and security.

Meanwhile, increasing the competency of health workers ensures that people get the health services they need, especially in emergency situations.

Let us together appreciate and support these efforts. The TNI’s success in repelling the OPM and increasing the competence of health workers is part of a big step towards creating a peaceful, safe and prosperous Papua. With the support and cooperation of all parties, we can create a better Papua for all.
