Democracy in Indonesia is inherently dynamic, including through political expression in the form of demonstrations. The wave of aspirations demonstrated by students, pupils, and youth is proof that democratic space remains vibrant. However, every aspirational movement requires balance to avoid falling into practices that undermine the very essence of freedom. This is where the presence of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) as the nation’s security guards becomes crucial, ensuring that demonstrations proceed in an orderly, safe, and dignified manner.

Recently, the solidarity of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has been in the spotlight. Both serve not only as security forces but also as a symbol of the state’s commitment to maintaining national stability. Joint patrols conducted in various regions demonstrate the authorities’ commitment to preventing potential unrest. This also emphasizes the state’s presence in every social dynamic, not leaving society to fend for itself in the face of potential disturbances.

Fikri, Coordinator of the Indonesian People’s Solidarity Alliance (ASRI) and the Indonesian National Women’s Committee (KNPRI), expressed his views, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a peaceful corridor. He believes that expressing opinions is a constitutional right of every citizen, but this right should not be abused to create unrest. Anarchic acts, vandalism, or provocation will only harm the wider community and undermine the spirit of democracy. He believes that the people’s struggle will be strong and meaningful if conveyed in a civilized manner. Fikri’s confidence in President Prabowo Subianto’s leadership also reflects his hope that the government will remain responsive to public aspirations without neglecting national security.

Similar appreciation came from the Muhammadiyah Youth Preparedness Command (KOKAM). KOKAM National Commander, Elly Oscar, viewed the National Police’s swift action in taking action against its members who violated procedures while guarding the demonstration as clear evidence of professionalism. The legal transparency demonstrated by the National Police fosters public trust that officers are not only tasked with maintaining order but also upholding ethics. He believes that the people’s aspirations can be effectively conveyed if officers prioritize a humanistic approach. This reinforces the belief that democracy will be healthier when both parties—the public and the officers—respect each other.

From the police force, the Head of the Indonesian National Police’s Public Information Bureau (Karo Penmas), Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, emphasized that the TNI-Polri synergy is not just a slogan. The presence of joint patrols is a concrete manifestation of the state’s responsibility in creating a sense of security. This was reinforced by the statement by the Head of the TNI Information Center, Brigadier General TNI (Mar) Freddy Ardianzah, who emphasized that the TNI’s role is not only to maintain stability, but also to listen to public criticism. By being open to public input, the TNI can be more anticipatory in implementing preventive measures. This attitude reflects modern professionalism that makes democracy and openness a strength, not a threat.

The implementation of this synergy is clearly visible in the regions. The Head of Public Relations for the North Sulawesi Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Alamsyah Parulian Hasibuan, stated that joint patrols not only create a sense of security but also emphasize the presence of officers directly among the community. This way, residents not only feel protected but also feel an emotional connection with the officers who accompany them in their daily lives.

Moral support for the authorities also came from civilians. Mario, Coordinator of the People’s Alliance for the Nation (ARPN), emphasized that rumors of a split between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) were merely provocative propaganda. He argued that without the solidarity of both institutions, it would be impossible to maintain national sovereignty and security. This view is crucial as it emphasizes that efforts to divide the authorities are merely a strategy of a handful of parties to weaken the foundations of democracy.

Academic perspectives also enrich the perspective. Stanislaus Riyanta, a lecturer in Strategic Intelligence Studies at the University of Indonesia, emphasized that the riots were not a sign of intelligence failure. He stated that intelligence provided information, but implementation remained dependent on policymakers. The situation on the ground was highly dynamic, and provocation on social media often accelerated escalation. He believes this is an important lesson for addressing issues developing in the public sphere, particularly online, early. Stanislaus’s explanation demonstrates that the riots are part of social complexity, not simply a failure of the authorities.

This statement urges the public to see the problem clearly. Blaming the authorities will only undermine trust in the country’s strategic institutions. Conversely, appreciating the concrete steps taken by the TNI and Polri will strengthen their legitimacy in the eyes of the public. Public trust is a crucial asset for the growth and maturity of Indonesian democracy.

Ultimately, the synergy between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) in maintaining security is not merely a routine task, but also part of a broader commitment to ensuring a healthy democracy. Demonstrations are a constitutionally guaranteed right, but they must be exercised peacefully. Anarchy is never a solution; it only leaves social wounds and economic losses.

Indonesia has a strong foundation of unity and togetherness. The solidarity of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the Indonesian National Police (Polri), appreciated by various elements of society, demonstrates that security is not merely a matter for the authorities, but also a shared responsibility. By prioritizing peace, respect, and civility, Indonesian democracy will mature. Unity between the people, the authorities, and the government is the greatest asset in facing all challenges, ensuring a safe, peaceful, and conducive future for the nation.
