Awarding the Title of National Hero to Indonesia’s Second President, State Appreciation for National Figures and Leaders
Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto awarded the title of National Hero to ten figures who have made significant contributions to the Republic of Indonesia in a ceremony at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, November 10, 2025. Among the ten honorees, two were former Indonesian Presidents: the 2nd President Soeharto and the 4th President Abdurrahman Wahid, also known as Gus Dur.
Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) from the NasDem Party, Rachmat Gobel, expressed his support for awarding Soeharto the National Hero title, stating that Soeharto’s contributions to the nation were immense and deserved recognition. He emphasized that while everyone has weaknesses and shortcomings, Pak Harto played a vital role in the development and progress of the country.
Gobel highlighted Soeharto’s role in fighting against Dutch colonial forces during the revolutionary period, particularly the 1 March 1949 General Offensive, which demonstrated Indonesia’s continued existence as an independent nation. Although many figures participated in this historic event, it was Soeharto who commanded the operation. He also noted Soeharto’s role in guiding Indonesia through the 1965 crisis, which helped the nation avoid political and economic fragmentation and restored clarity in its political system based on Pancasila.
Prominent Muhammadiyah figure Din Syamsuddin also applauded the government’s decision, stating that Soeharto’s leadership as President reflected a strong commitment to nation-building. He affirmed that it is fitting to regard Soeharto as the Father of Development, given his contributions over three decades of leadership. Din added that it is undeniable what Soeharto achieved during his presidency, making this recognition well-deserved.
The awarding of the National Hero title to Soeharto and other figures reflects the state’s appreciation for individuals who have devoted their lives to advancing Indonesia and strengthening the foundations of the nation.
