Jakarta – The conferral of the National Hero title to Indonesia’s 2nd President, Soeharto, has received widespread appreciation from various circles. Religious figures, public officials, and academics alike consider Soeharto deserving of national recognition for his services and dedication in maintaining stability and building the nation.

The Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Fatwa Division, Asrorun Niam Sholeh, stated that a great nation is one that respects its leaders.

“Every former president who has passed away deserves to be honored as a national hero. They have struggled and sacrificed while leading the country,” he said.

He emphasized that the award is not merely symbolic, but also serves as a moment to strengthen national values and unity.

Asrorun Niam also believes that granting the title to Soeharto is a wise step in reinforcing the spirit of national reconciliation.

“Society should not harbor grudges or dwell on past wrongs, because no one is perfect,” he added.

He further noted that every leader works within their own era, facing unique challenges and limitations.

“We cannot keep judging the past with today’s perspective. Forgiving and appreciating contributions is a sign of a nation’s maturity,” he added.

The Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, shared a similar view. He stressed that there is no evidence indicating Soeharto’s involvement in the 1965–1966 genocide.

“These allegations have never been proven legally or by valid historical facts,” he said.

According to him, the assessment of national figures should be based on objective data, not political stigma or specific interests.

Soeharto is known for leading Indonesia for 32 years with various development programs such as Repelita and GBHN, which laid the foundation for national progress.

Although the New Order era is not without criticism, many parties believe his contributions should be viewed comprehensively and proportionally.

Support also came from the Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, Dadang Kahmad, who sees Soeharto as an important figure in the nation’s history.

“We must assess history proportionally. Soeharto made significant contributions to Indonesia, both as a freedom fighter and a development leader,” he said, recalling Soeharto’s role in the March 1, 1949 General Offensive.

The conferral of the National Hero title to Soeharto is seen as a tribute to his dedication and a symbol of the nation’s maturity in appreciating its historical journey.
