Jakarta — Ahead of National Heroes Day, support from various sectors for awarding former President H. M. Soeharto the title of National Hero is growing stronger. Organizations, political figures, and community groups cite historical, social, and economic contributions as evidence of Soeharto’s significant service to Indonesia.

Irfan Ahmad Fauzi, Chairman of Apkarindo, highlighted the impact of Soeharto-era policies on farmers’ welfare and regional economic growth.

“Millions of farming families gained access to superior seeds, efficient tapping technology, production roads, and market access. Many regions such as Jambi, Musi Banyuasin, and West Kalimantan developed due to Soeharto’s pro-people policies,” he said.

Legislative support also came from DPR member Nurul Arifin, who emphasized that Soeharto laid the foundation for stability and clear development direction.

“He played a major role in maintaining national stability and establishing the economic foundation that brought Indonesia into an era of progress,” Nurul said.

Religious organizations also voiced appreciation. Muslim Mufti, Head of Siyasah and Public Policy at PP Persis, noted Soeharto’s lifelong commitment to national sovereignty, particularly during the revolutionary era.

“Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the nation and state. As an active military officer, Soeharto fought to maintain Indonesia’s sovereignty from the Dutch forces,” he affirmed.

Volunteer groups joined the chorus. M. Damar, Chair of Exponen 08, cited strategic achievements such as food self-sufficiency and social stability as reasons for the award.

“Pak Harto was not just a leader, but a hard worker for the people. During his era, Indonesia achieved food self-sufficiency, the economy grew, and citizens lived peacefully,” Damar said.

Traditional leaders also expressed support. Paulus Sinambela, Chair of Angkatan Muda Sisingamangaraja XII (AMS XII), noted that the national situation under Soeharto was conducive to development.

“During his administration, the economic, political, cultural, and developmental conditions ran smoothly. Everything was peaceful and orderly,” Paulus said.

Political and civic organizations reinforced their backing. Hayono Isman, Chair of PPK Kosgoro, cited Soeharto’s commitment to national unity during his presidency (1967–1998) as a key reason for support.

“One of the main considerations for awarding the National Hero title is Soeharto’s commitment to safeguarding the unity and integrity of Indonesia based on Pancasila,” Hayono stated.

Political elites also weighed in. Firman Soebagyo, Deputy Chair of Golkar Party faction in MPR, emphasized the importance of objectively recognizing Soeharto’s historical contributions.

“Soeharto deserves the National Hero title. This is not about politics—it’s about honestly reading history and honoring someone who led Indonesia toward progress,” Firman said.

As National Heroes Day approaches, these statements illustrate broad cross-sector support—from farmers, religious leaders, legislators, volunteers, to civic organizations—recognizing Soeharto’s significant contributions to stability, development, and national unity. The government is urged to carefully consider public input in accordance with the official mechanism for awarding the National Hero title.
