Eid Social Assistance Proves the State Listens to the People’s Voice

Ahead of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr celebration, the government has once again distributed various social assistance programs across Indonesia. This policy is not merely an annual routine but also reflects the state’s commitment to responding to the needs of society, particularly vulnerable groups affected by economic pressures and rising prices of essential goods during the month of Ramadan. Amid increasing economic activity ahead of the holiday, social assistance has become an important instrument to ensure that people maintain adequate purchasing power.
The Eid season is always closely associated with rising household consumption. During this period, the prices of several food commodities often increase due to higher demand. In addition, family needs expand, ranging from food and clothing to the costs of traveling home for the holiday. In such circumstances, state intervention through social protection policies becomes crucial so that people can continue to meet their basic needs and celebrate the holiday with dignity.
The government, through the Ministry of Social Affairs of Indonesia, emphasized that social assistance distributed ahead of Eid forms part of a broader social protection strategy as well as an economic stimulus. The program is designed to maintain the stability of public consumption while helping to reduce the economic burden on low-income families. By safeguarding purchasing power, the government hopes that economic activity will continue to move and contribute positively to national economic growth.
The Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf, stated that social assistance is an important instrument for maintaining the economic stability of communities, particularly when the prices of essential goods fluctuate ahead of major religious holidays. The government wants to ensure that people remain able to meet their basic needs and are not overwhelmed by rising prices. He emphasized that the presence of the state through social assistance aims to provide a sense of security and reassurance for people as they welcome the holiday.
The distribution of social assistance is carried out gradually by utilizing national socio-economic data that continues to be updated. The government seeks to ensure that the assistance truly reaches those who are entitled to receive it, particularly people in the lowest income groups who need the most support from the state. Data updates are an important step to ensure that social assistance policies are more targeted and able to reach those who genuinely require assistance.
This year, the government has prepared a budget of around Rp17.5 trillion for various social assistance programs distributed ahead of Eid. The assistance is intended for approximately 18 million beneficiary families across Indonesia. The programs include basic food assistance, the Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH), and the Bantuan Pangan Non Tunai(BPNT). Distribution is carried out gradually leading up to Eid so that the benefits can be felt directly by the community.
In addition to social assistance, the government has also prepared an economic stimulus package for the Ramadan and Eid period of 2026 valued at approximately Rp13 trillion. This stimulus includes various policies aimed at strengthening people’s purchasing power while encouraging domestic consumption. Some of these measures include transportation subsidies, discounted travel fares, and policies supporting community mobility during the homecoming travel season and Eid holidays.
The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, explained that the policy package is designed to maintain the momentum of national economic growth. Household consumption remains the primary engine of Indonesia’s economic growth. Therefore, the government seeks to ensure that public purchasing power remains strong while encouraging economic activity during the Ramadan and Eid period, which typically sees a significant increase in consumption.
Beyond general assistance programs, the government has also provided special social assistance for communities affected by disasters in several regions, including Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. This support includes logistical assistance, temporary livelihood guarantees, and economic recovery assistance for affected residents. These measures demonstrate that social assistance policies are not only broad in scope but also adaptive to evolving social conditions in different regions.
Such actions reflect the state’s effort to be present quickly and responsively in assisting communities facing emergency situations ahead of the holiday. With timely support, communities affected by disasters are expected to still experience a sense of happiness and peace when celebrating Eid al-Fitr.
Economist Yusuf Rendy Manilet from the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) assessed that the combination of social assistance and seasonal economic stimulus can have a positive impact on household consumption. According to him, the broader the reach of social assistance programs, the greater the potential impact on national economic activity. This is because household consumption during Ramadan and Eid remains one of the main drivers of Indonesia’s economic growth.
Social assistance policies also demonstrate that the government listens to the aspirations of the people. On many occasions, communities express their expectation that the state should be present when economic burdens increase, particularly ahead of important moments such as Eid. Through the distribution of social assistance, the government seeks to respond to these expectations with concrete policies whose benefits can be felt directly by society.
Ultimately, social assistance policies ahead of Eid also illustrate that national development is not solely oriented toward economic growth but also toward social justice. The state seeks to ensure that the benefits of development are distributed more evenly across all segments of society.
