Energy Self-Sufficiency Drives Economic Growth and Job Opportunities
Jakarta – Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives is expediting the revision of the Electricity Law as a concrete step to support President Prabowo Subianto’s vision of making Indonesia self-sufficient in the energy sector.
Member of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Rokhmat Ardiyan, emphasized that the revision of this law does not only focus on the availability of electricity supplies, but also more effective utilization and distribution of energy.
“Remember, Indonesia has been independent for 80 years, in line with President Prabowo’s dream of achieving energy self-sufficiency, especially in the electricity sector,” he said.
Rokhmat added that electricity must be a strategic instrument for improving people’s welfare. He believes Indonesia’s abundant energy resources must be managed with appropriate regulations to ensure long-term benefits.
Equal distribution, he said, is the main requirement so that all people, from Sabang to Merauke, can enjoy electricity as a basic right.
“This will attract investors, boost economic growth, and achieve our ambitious economic growth targets,” he said.
He emphasized that the revised law should not remain merely a legal document, but rather a concrete instrument that ensures reliable, affordable, and equitable electricity availability. This foundation is believed to drive inclusive economic growth, create jobs, and accelerate cross-sector innovation.
Meanwhile, PT PLN (Persero) is taking a strategic role in the energy self-sufficiency agenda by accelerating the development of Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP). This step also supports the transition to sustainable, clean energy.
PLN’s Director of Project Management and New and Renewable Energy, Suroso Isnandar, stated that the direction for geothermal development is outlined in the 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). The government is targeting a national geothermal power plant capacity of 5.2 gigawatts (GW).
“Indonesia’s geothermal potential is vast and spread across various regions. PLN is committed to ensuring that every project it undertakes benefits not only electricity customers but also the surrounding communities,” he said.
To expedite implementation, PLN is partnering with geothermal developers through a steam purchase agreement (SPA). This strategy is expected to strengthen investment feasibility and ensure project sustainability.
“We ensure the project is executed with competent strategic partners who share our vision. The energy produced must be environmentally friendly and affordable for the community. All processes are transparent, accountable, and in accordance with regulations,” Suroso emphasized.
This step will strengthen investment attractiveness, create new jobs, and better prepare Indonesia to compete in the era of global energy transition. Energy self-sufficiency is no longer just a vision, but a path to sustainable economic growth and more equitable public prosperity.
