Enhancing Service Quality Assurance, MBG Uses Premium Rice from Bulog

Jakarta – The government continues to make optimal efforts to ensure the quality of services under the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG). These efforts aim to ensure that nutritious meals are delivered properly and continue to improve in line with public expectations.

To meet targets for improving the quality of Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG), premium rice supplied by Perum Bulog is now being used. Director of Marketing at Perum Bulog, Febby Novita, assured that rice supplies remain stable, even outside the harvest season.

“Actually, for the MBG program, premium rice is already widely used. In East Java, some SPPG have already adopted it. Central Java, Yogyakarta, and Kalimantan also use it extensively. It just hasn’t been widely exposed yet,” Febby said in West Jakarta on February 1, 2026.

Febby explained that Bulog’s premium rice stock is still sufficient to meet national needs, despite high demand from SPPG for MBG implementation.

Referring to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), national rice production has reached around 34 million tons, while consumption stands at approximately 31 million tons.

“It’s safe (in terms of stock). Based on BPS data, Indonesia’s production is about 34 million tons, while consumption is 31 million tons, so there is still a significant surplus. In fact, Bulog has been assigned a target of 2 million tons this year,” Febby explained.

Nationally, premium rice stocks remain secure even while supplying MBG for mass consumption. On the other hand, the government has also calculated that the MBG program tends to shift a certain volume of household rice consumption to kitchens managed by SPPG.

Febby further stated, “So actually the consumption level remains the same. Consumption is 31 million tons, which means there is still a surplus when we look at production figures from BPS. So it’s safe, especially since Bulog’s stock is abundant.”

Previously, the use of premium rice for MBG needs was also confirmed by the National Nutrition Agency. Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), Dadan Hindayana, said that SPPG in remote areas are using rice supplied by Perum Bulog for the MBG program.

“Regions that face supply difficulties are already using Bulog (rice),” he said.

The government is targeting MBG beneficiaries to reach 82.9 million people in 2026.

Data from the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs shows that by the end of January 2026, the MBG program had reached more than 60 million beneficiaries. Meanwhile, labor absorption has reached around 1 million workers to support SPPG services.

Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan stated that MBG, as a priority program of President Prabowo Subianto, had reached 60 million beneficiaries and absorbed 1 million workers through SPPG services by the end of January 2026.
