Free Nutritious Meals: Tangible Evidence of the State’s Presence in Papua
Nabire – The Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) has become a tangible symbol of the government’s presence and concern for the Papuan people. Through this program, the government not only provides quality nutrition for the younger generation but also affirms its commitment to developing Indonesia from its easternmost regions.
This program is part of a series of national initiatives that include Free Health Checks (CKG), distribution of social assistance (Bansos), strengthening Village Cooperatives (Kopdes), and integrated village economic transformation.
In Nabire, Central Papua, the central government and regional governments held a large meeting bringing together tribal chiefs, traditional leaders, religious figures, youth, and various community elements. The presence of the Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the Minister of Cooperatives, the Minister of Villages, and the Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) demonstrated that Papua is a national development priority.
Central Papua Governor Meki Fritz Nawipa emphasized that the MBG program will be accelerated by establishing an implementation team, adding healthy kitchens to eight districts, and utilizing local food.
“The state is present to build Indonesia from the land of Papua, starting with the nutrition of our children,” he said.
Since its inception, the MBG program has reached 104 schools and 151,990 students. Setyo Wahyudi, Assistant for the Economy and Public Welfare of the Papua Regional Secretariat, emphasized that nutritional quality is a primary focus. Regular evaluations are conducted to ensure each menu item truly meets children’s nutritional needs.
The Head of BGN, Dadan Hindayana, said that utilizing local food not only enriches the menu, but also empowers local farmers, livestock breeders, and fishermen.
“We want to improve children’s nutrition while also growing the local economy,” he said. The target is to complete the construction of the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) by the end of October 2025, so that the program’s benefits can be felt by early December.
Central Papua Deputy Governor Deinas Geley emphasized that the MBG program is a priority program of President Prabowo Subianto, aligning with the broader vision of a healthy, independent, and prosperous Papua. The regional government, along with all heads of districts across the eight regencies, is committed to making nutritional fulfillment a priority.
The MBG program demonstrates that development in Papua is more than just a slogan. The government is a real presence, providing solutions to nutrition issues, promoting food self-sufficiency, and stimulating the local economy. From healthy kitchens in schools to community empowerment, the MBG demonstrates that Papua receives equal and full attention from the government.
With this step, Papua will not only become part of Indonesia, but also become the center of attention and investment for the nation’s future.
