Government Accelerates Asset Confiscation Bill to Meet 17+8 Aspirations
Jakarta – The government has affirmed its readiness to expedite deliberations on the Asset Confiscation Bill as part of its commitment to meeting public aspirations, including the demands of the 17+8 movement.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections (Menko Kumham Imipas), Yusril Ihza Mahendra, stated that the government has completed the draft bill and is opening the door for the House of Representatives (DPR) to deliberate it immediately.
“From the government’s perspective, we are ready to discuss this bill whenever the DPR submits it to President Prabowo,” Yusril said in an official statement.
Yusril explained that the Asset Confiscation Bill was originally proposed during the era of Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo in 2023.
At that time, the government assigned Mahfud MD and Yasonna Laoly to represent them in the deliberations. However, deliberations have not yet proceeded in the DPR.
Therefore, President Prabowo asked House Speaker Puan Maharani to take immediate steps so that this bill can enter the deliberation stage.
“Therefore, I hope all parties do not need to hesitate. Once the House of Representatives is ready, the President will immediately appoint a minister to represent the government,” Yusril emphasized.
He added that Minister of Law and Human Rights Supratman, Andi Agtas, has followed up by including the Asset Forfeiture Bill in the 2025–2026 Priority National Legislation Program (Prolegnas).
“Hopefully, this bill can be finalized next year,” he said.
Supratman ensured that the government and the House of Representatives share the same commitment to completing this regulation.
“What is clear is that the political commitment between the President and the House of Representatives is united regarding the asset forfeiture bill,” he said.
He believes deliberations will be faster because the bill is now a DPR initiative. “If the House of Representatives proposes the initiative, it will certainly be faster because the government is already prepared and has the draft,” Supratman said.
According to him, deliberations on this bill do not have to wait for the completion of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) Bill.
“The KUHAP Bill is just waiting for a decision, so it will definitely be expedited,” he added.
The Chairman of the Legislative Body (Baleg) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Bob Hasan, is targeting completion of the Asset Confiscation Bill in 2025.
“The target is for everything to be finalized this year,” he said.
However, he emphasized the importance of involving the public in the deliberations through meaningful participation.
With this accelerated step, the government and the DPR are striving to address public aspirations while strengthening the legal foundation for corruption eradication and state asset management.—
