Government Emphasizes Integrity and Professionalism of Law Enforcement Officials in Welcoming the National Criminal Code

Jakarta – The government continues to affirm its commitment to strengthening the integrity and professionalism of law enforcement officials as the National Criminal Code (KUHP) comes into effect on January 2, 2026.

This emphasis is considered crucial to ensure that the transformation of criminal law aligns with the principles of justice and humanity, while maintaining public trust in law enforcement institutions.

This commitment was reflected in the virtual working visit of the Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia, attended by all Prosecutor’s Office work units across Indonesia, on Tuesday (December 30, 2025).

In his remarks, Attorney General ST Burhanuddin expressed his appreciation to all members of the Prosecutor’s Office who continue to work with dedication and professionalism. He emphasized that integrity is the primary foundation for maintaining the dignity of law enforcement institutions.

“Integrity is the main foundation. The Prosecutor’s Office does not need intelligent employees who lack integrity. Intelligence without integrity has the potential to pose a threat, both to the institution and to society,” Burhanuddin emphasized.

Furthermore, ahead of the enactment of the National Criminal Code, the Attorney General encouraged all Prosecutor’s Office personnel to increase their preparedness for the transformation of criminal law.

“This readiness must be realized through strengthening understanding of legal substance, increasing synergy between institutions, and implementing expanded authority carefully, responsibly, and under strict supervision,” he said.

He also emphasized that this regulatory update must be interpreted as strengthening the legal system, not as a loophole for individuals to commit irregularities, manipulate cases, or commit other reprehensible acts.

A similar affirmation was made by Deputy Minister of Law Eddy Hiariej. He stated that the National Criminal Code was designed as a more modern, humanistic, and future-oriented legal instrument.

“The National Criminal Code carries a vision of social reintegration. This means that this Criminal Code aims to provide criminals with the opportunity to repent and return to contributing to society,” Eddy explained.

According to him, this approach is expected to reduce recidivism rates through a more proportional and development-oriented sentencing system.

Meanwhile, Agung Rektono Seto, Head of the Yogyakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Law, emphasized that the main spirit of the National Criminal Code is humanity and balanced justice.

“The National Criminal Code embodies the vision of social reintegration, providing opportunities for those who have committed wrongdoing to repent and improve themselves so that they can be accepted back into society and benefit society,” he said.

The synergy between government policy and the preparedness of law enforcement officials confirms that the enactment of the National Criminal Code is not simply a regulatory change, but a strategic momentum to strengthen integrity, professionalism, and a more civilized and sustainable approach to legal justice in Indonesia.
