JAKARTA – The government has inaugurated 100 People’s Schools (SR) simultaneously throughout Indonesia for the 2025/2026 school year. This program is a direct initiative of President Prabowo Subianto as a strategic step to expand access to education for children from poor and extremely poor families.
Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Affairs, Robben, revealed that the President gave direct instructions to add 100 new points of People’s Schools, bringing the total to 200 locations.
“This addition will utilize the Job Training Centers (BLK) spread throughout Indonesia,” said Robben.
He explained that the People’s School was a direct idea of the President that must be supported by all ministries and local governments. “The concept is similar to SMA Taruna Nusantara. In it there are elementary, junior high, and high schools that are fully funded by the APBN,” he continued.
For the initial stage, the government is using a building loan scheme for one year, which will then be returned in a usable condition.
Robben added that the program not only provides formal education, but also character building, digital literacy, and skills training. “These children are prepared to become the golden generation in 2045. Even their parents are empowered, including repairing uninhabitable houses,” he said.
Then, the Minister of Social Affairs, Saifullah Yusuf or Gus Ipul, ensured that the first 100 points of the People’s Schools were ready to operate starting July 14, 2025. “The principals and teachers have undergone intensive training until the end of June. God willing, everything is ready,” said Gus Ipul.
He said that each school has a different capacity. In Sentra Handayani Jakarta, for example, it will accommodate 75 students for junior high school level. “Overall, we are targeting more than 20 thousand students to be able to attend education at the People’s School this year,” he explained.
Gus Ipul also added that 100 additional points are in the process. “We are finalizing the cooperation with the Ministry of Manpower. The BLK buildings are quite adequate and ready to be used,” he said. He emphasized that all student needs ranging from uniforms, meals, dormitories, to learning tools will be borne by the state.
