Government Launches School Holiday Stimulus Through Toll and Transportation Discounts

JAKARTA – The government has once again implemented a 20% toll fee discount as part of its national economic stimulus package. This discount applies to several toll road segments for a total of 10 days, divided into three periods: Eid al-Adha holidays (June 6–9), the beginning of school holidays (June 27–29), and the end of school holidays (July 11–13, 2025).

Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo stated that the policy aims to maintain public purchasing power, facilitate mobility during the long holiday, and support national economic recovery.

“This policy is expected to serve as a stimulus to boost economic growth and support safe, comfortable, and efficient mobility,” he said.

Meanwhile, Permata Bank Chief Economist Josua Pardede considered this initiative a well-targeted strategy. Toll discounts are expected to create a multiplier effect on household consumption, transportation services, hospitality, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“School holidays can be utilized to drive public spending, particularly in the leisure and tourism sectors,” he noted.

Similarly, Presidential Staff Office Economic Advisor Fithra Faisal Hastiadi explained that the stimulus aims to regain national economic growth momentum. “The government is striving to bring growth back to 5%, and even push toward the 5.2% target,” he said.

Faisal added that transportation stimulus is highly strategic as it is directly linked to the tourism and creative economy sectors.

“Increased demand from this stimulus could open room for producers to expand and create new economic opportunities,” he emphasized.

Nine toll road operators—including PT Jasa Marga, Hutama Karya, and Astra Infra Toll Road—have expressed readiness to implement the discount. The toll fee reduction applies to long-distance direct travel (barrier to barrier) and is adjusted according to the traffic characteristics of each toll segment. For instance, on the Cimanggis–Cibitung Toll Road, the discount starts at 6:00 AM local time, while on the Bakauheni–Kayuagung corridor, it starts at 7:00 AM.

The toll discount is part of two transportation stimulus measures rolled out during the school holiday season. Out of a total of five stimulus packages amounting to IDR 24.4 trillion, IDR 0.65 trillion has been allocated for toll fee subsidies, and IDR 0.94 trillion for public transportation discounts. All stimulus funding comes from the state budget (APBN) as a reflection of the government’s commitment to preserving public purchasing power.
