Government Reaffirms That Energy Self-Sufficiency Is Within Reach
Jakarta – The government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to achieving national energy self-sufficiency, one of the priority programs of President Prabowo Subianto. A recent concrete step was marked by the inauguration of 15 members of the National Energy Council (DEN) by the President at the State Palace, which is expected to accelerate Indonesia’s progress toward energy independence.
Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi stated that the establishment and strengthening of the National Energy Council play a crucial role in orchestrating cross-sectoral energy policies. According to him, while several technical programs toward energy self-sufficiency have already been implemented by relevant ministries, the presence of DEN is expected to accelerate comprehensive and integrated preparation processes.
“Technically, several programs to achieve energy self-sufficiency have already been carried out by ministries. With the inauguration of the National Energy Council, we hope the preparatory processes toward energy self-sufficiency can be accelerated,” Prasetyo said.
He added that a number of priority programs have been prepared by the government, ranging from increasing oil and gas lifting to shifting energy resources toward new and renewable energy, such as biofuels and solar power.
“These measures are considered essential to reduce dependence on energy imports while strengthening national resilience,” he added.
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized that President Prabowo’s energy policy direction focuses on energy sovereignty, energy security, and energy self-sufficiency. One of the main instruments to achieve these targets is the formulation of a national energy policy roadmap developed jointly with the National Energy Council. According to him, DEN has been working on preparing various stages of the National Energy General Plan (RUEN), including the development of new and renewable energy as well as the advancement of nuclear power utilization.
“To achieve energy independence, the implementation of B50 will reduce fuel imports. Currently, our imports are still around 30 million kiloliters,” Bahlil said.
Support for the energy self-sufficiency agenda has also come from the upstream oil and gas sector. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan assessed that the oil production achievements of PGN SAKA in the Pangkah Working Area throughout 2025, which exceeded the state budget (APBN) target, represent a tangible contribution to safeguarding national energy supply. He emphasized the President’s directive to prevent any leakage of natural resources and to continuously improve performance in order to achieve sustainable energy self-sufficiency.
The National Energy Council consists of representatives from the government and various stakeholders. From the government side, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia has been appointed as the Daily Chair of DEN, with members including the Minister of Finance, Minister of Industry, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Environment, and the Minister of National Development Planning/Bappenas. From the stakeholder side, DEN involves representatives from academia, industry, technology, environmental groups, and consumers to ensure that energy policies are formulated in a comprehensive and inclusive manner.
