Government Strengthens Financial System, Cracks Down on Online Gambling to the Root
JAKARTA — The government, through the Financial Services Authority (OJK), continues to strengthen oversight measures in the financial sector, particularly in combating the misuse of dormant or inactive bank accounts that are often exploited for online gambling and other financial crimes. This reinforcement is a response to the increasing risks of digital security threats and public losses due to cybercrime in the banking sector.
Dian Ediana Rae, the Chief Executive of Banking Supervision at OJK, emphasized that intensive meetings have been held with all national banking compliance directors. These meetings discussed anticipatory strategies to prevent the misuse of dormant accounts and formulated guidelines for handling fraud or scam cases.
“Moving forward, OJK will strengthen supervision and regulations regarding the use of dormant accounts and develop guidelines for managing fraud or scam cases,” said Dian.
She explained that this initiative is part of OJK’s commitment to enhance public literacy and vigilance against various financial crime schemes, especially those targeting bank customers. Dian stated that prompt and responsive oversight is the key to preventing greater risks to the stability of the financial system.
In its implementation, OJK not only focuses on strengthening the supervision of inactive accounts but is also preparing new regulations related to information technology in the banking sector. These regulations are deemed important given the increasing threat of cyber incidents that could potentially undermine the integrity of the national financial system.
Data from Komdigi shows that by May 2025, OJK has requested the blocking of approximately 17,000 accounts suspected of being used for online gambling activities. This figure marks a significant increase of about 20 percent compared to the previous month, which recorded 14,117 accounts.
Dian added that affected customers still retain full rights over their funds despite the temporary suspension of dormant accounts.
“The reactivation process can be done through bank branches or official bank applications by following the applicable procedures,” she explained.
She affirmed that all these measures aim to maintain the integrity of the national financial system and provide maximum protection to the public from illegal practices exploiting loopholes in the banking system.
“This step also strengthens cross-agency collaboration in the eradication of illegal financial activities, especially online gambling practices that have troubled various layers of society,” she concluded.
