The rise of online gambling in Indonesia continues to be a serious concern for the government and various private parties. The government does not only rely on policies and regulations, but also collaborates with the private sector in efforts to eradicate online gambling. One real example is the collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) and the private sector, such as the Indonesian Joint Funding Fintech Association (AFPI) and GoPay, in combating online gambling.
AFPI Chairman, Entjik S Djafar, said that his party had reminded all members to detect and avoid financing that could potentially be used for online gambling activities. He emphasized that efforts to eradicate illegal online loans are also a priority, considering the many cases where funds from illegal loans are used for online gambling. In addition, AFPI has conducted socialization and education to the public regarding the wise use of loans and the potential dangers of online gambling.
In addition to AFPI, GoPay, as a Financial Technology business unit of PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk, also took part in combating online gambling through the Aliansi Judi Pasti Rugi initiative. This alliance involves various parties, including Gojek driver partners, to become educational agents in informing the public about the dangers of online gambling. The Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, appreciated this step because it involved a wider ecosystem in eradicating online gambling. She emphasized that although the government has blocked more than one million online gambling sites, this step is not enough without support from various parties.
The Gambling Alliance Movement is definitely a loss also involves a number of large institutions such as Telkomsel, Google, TikTok, and the mass media, so that this collaboration is getting stronger. In addition, digital education and literacy for the public also continues to be intensified, including through activities in various regions such as South Sulawesi and plans to Ambon this year.
Eradicating online gambling is not only about blocking sites or banning transactions, but also changing people’s mindsets. Literacy and education efforts are very important so that people understand the financial risks and social impacts of being involved in online gambling. Gojek driver partners, with high mobility and direct access to the community, play a role as the spearhead in disseminating information about the dangers of online gambling.
This synergy between the government and the private sector shows that eradicating online gambling requires a collaborative and sustainable approach. The government realizes that to eliminate online gambling practices, direct involvement from various elements of society and business actors is needed. Thus, it is hoped that this effort can create a healthy and safe digital ecosystem for all levels of society.
However, challenges remain. Online gambling is not just a technical issue, but also involves social and cultural aspects. The habit of gambling that has taken root in some communities requires a paradigm shift through massive campaigns and continuous education. In this context, involving community leaders, clerics, and religious leaders is very relevant to strengthen the moral message about the dangers of online gambling.
The government also needs to encourage strengthening regulations and strengthening supervision of suspicious financial transactions. Collaboration with banking and fintech authorities is essential in order to detect the flow of funds that have the potential to be used for online gambling. No less important is the imposition of strict sanctions on parties proven to facilitate or be involved in such practices.
In addition to the regulatory and supervisory side, synergy with the private sector must also include providing alternative economic skills for those affected by online gambling. Community economic empowerment through MSMEs, job training programs, and access to decent work can be a preventive solution in reducing dependence on online gambling.
Ultimately, eradicating online gambling should not be done partially or half-heartedly. The government and the private sector must be consistent in maintaining the momentum of this collaboration, not only in the context of educational campaigns but also in increasing the capacity of the community to avoid the trap of online gambling. With solid cooperation and strong synergy, it is hoped that Indonesia can soon be free from the threat of online gambling that damages the social and economic joints of the nation.
