Government, Through State-Owned Enterprises, Optimizes Natural Gas Utilization for Energy Self-Sufficiency

Jakarta – The government continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to achieving national energy self-sufficiency through various strategic efforts, one of which is optimizing the utilization of natural gas. This initiative aligns with Indonesia’s long-term vision of becoming an independent and sovereign energy-producing nation.

Through State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), various initiatives have been launched to accelerate the efficient, sustainable, and inclusive use of the country’s abundant natural gas potential.

Natural gas is considered to play a vital role in the energy transition, particularly as a cleaner energy source compared to coal or petroleum. With reserves distributed across various regions, Indonesia has significant potential to optimize this commodity in order to strengthen domestic energy security and reduce dependence on imported energy.

PT Perusahaan Gas Negara Tbk (PGAS), or PGN, is currently prioritizing strategies to increase the use of natural gas as part of the energy transition towards achieving national energy self-sufficiency. This step is in line with the national energy mix projection, which targets a 22% contribution from natural gas by 2025.

Natural gas is also seen as having significant potential in supporting the decarbonization agenda, particularly through infrastructure development and the advancement of green energy products. As a fossil fuel with relatively lower emissions, natural gas plays a strategic role in the national energy roadmap toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy system.

“Natural gas is a fossil fuel with lower emissions compared to other fossil fuels. In line with the projected energy mix, there is a significant share allocated to natural gas as a priority energy source,” said PGN’s Director of Strategy and Business Development, Rosa Permata Sari.

To support the achievement of this target, PGN has prepared a priority strategy for the next five years, which includes the development of new infrastructure. One of its main focuses is the expansion of the household gas distribution network (jargas).

“We aim to add around 450,000 household connections over the next five years,” said Rosa.

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto set a target of achieving self-sufficiency in both food and energy within the next five years.

“We must optimize domestic natural gas,” President Prabowo emphasized.

By continuing to optimize natural gas potential through the active role of SOEs, Indonesia is on the right track toward achieving energy self-sufficiency.
