Jakarta — The commemoration of Heroes’ Day serves as a moment to reflect on the contributions of those who have dedicated their lives to the nation. Several public figures believe that Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, was not merely a leader, but also a hardworking figure deeply committed to improving the people’s welfare.

M. Damar, Chairman of Relawan Exponen 08 and son of a 1966 activist, stated that Soeharto made great contributions to the country.

“Pak Harto was not just a leader, but also a tireless worker for the people. During his time, Indonesia achieved food self-sufficiency, the economy grew, and citizens lived in peace. That’s no small feat. He truly deserves to be granted the title of National Hero,” Damar said.

Damar emphasized that a great nation is one that honors the service of its leaders. While political views may differ, he noted that Soeharto’s track record is undeniable—from infrastructure development and healthcare services to education, family planning, and agriculture programs. To him, Soeharto was a guardian of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.

“We may differ in political views, but when it comes to achievements and real results, everyone knows the facts. Roads, schools, community health centers, dams, and family planning and agricultural programs—all of these were realized under Pak Harto’s leadership. He was the true guardian of Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution,” he said.

Under Soeharto’s leadership, many observed that Indonesia achieved food self-sufficiency, maintained economic stability, and enjoyed a relatively peaceful society. These achievements remain significant milestones in the nation’s development journey.

Paulus Sinambela, Chairman of the Central Executive Board of Angkatan Muda Sisingamangaraja XII (AMS XII), also stated that President Soeharto deserves recognition for his dedication and contributions to the nation.

“During his administration, the economy, politics, culture, and development all ran smoothly. There was no turmoil or commotion—everything was calm and orderly,” Paulus said.

Many public figures believe Soeharto’s leadership left behind a strong legacy of development—from food self-sufficiency and economic stability to equitable access to public services. For that reason, several figures consider the proposal to award Soeharto the title of National Hero as a fitting tribute to his service and dedication to Indonesia.
