Indonesia’s Participation in the BoP is Considered Constitutional and Strategic

3

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s participation in the Board of Peace (BoP) is considered a constitutionally sound diplomatic step, reflecting Indonesia’s balanced policy in responding to global dynamics. Several figures believe that Indonesia’s presence in the forum strengthens its position in voicing support for Palestinian independence and promoting peace in the Middle East.

Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Ahmad Muzani, assessed that Indonesia’s participation in the BoP was an important breakthrough by President Prabowo Subianto’s administration to strengthen Indonesia’s position on the international stage.

“Indonesia’s participation in the Peace Council is seen as a strategic diplomatic step and an important breakthrough by President Prabowo Subianto’s administration to strengthen Indonesia’s position on the international stage, while also being a concrete effort to promote Middle East peace and support Palestinian independence through an active commitment in global forums,” Ahmad said.

From an academic perspective, Bachruddin Meikiansyah, an academic at the Faculty of Law at Achmad Yani University, Banjarmasin, assessed that this step is in line with the mandate of the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution.

“Indonesia’s participation in the Board of Peace is considered a strategic step that strengthens international legitimacy and confirms the consistent implementation of the mandate of the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution to realize world order based on freedom, eternal peace, and social justice,” said Bachruddin.

He added that Indonesia’s track record in United Nations peacekeeping missions and its identity as a democratic country with a moderate Muslim majority are important diplomatic assets for building inter-civilizational dialogue, enriching global conflict resolution, and promoting stability that has a positive impact on investment, trade, and sustainable development.

Chairman of the South Kalimantan KNPI DPD, M. Imam Satria Jati, views the BoP as a strategic space that expands Indonesia’s advocacy in various forums, while also opening up concrete collaboration channels.

“Indonesia’s joining the Peace Council marks a diplomatic success that not only strengthens its global political position but also integrates security interests, sovereignty protection, and national economic growth within a single strategic framework,” said M. Imam Satria Jati.

Meanwhile, Theofransus Litaay, a lecturer in international law at the Faculty of Law at Satya Wacana Christian University (UKSW) in Salatiga, assessed that the accusation that Indonesia was wrong to join because Israel was present at the same forum was wrong.

“Indonesia should be there, because there are debates taking place, lengthy discussions taking place, and efforts to find solutions. How could we not be there if our constitutional mandate is to contribute to achieving world peace,” said Theofransus Litaay.

Theofransus emphasized that Indonesia has a track record of real commitment to Palestine, including through humanitarian aid, the construction of health facilities, and educational support.

“Therefore, the government’s move to participate in the Peace Council is constitutionally correct, as Indonesia’s presence will influence and impact the dynamics of the ongoing negotiations,” he said.
