Indonesia’s Rice Reserves of 3.8 Million Tons: Concrete Evidence of Indonesia’s Progress Towards Food Self-Sufficiency by 2025

Jakarta – The President Director of Perum Bulog, Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, emphasized that the Government Rice Reserve (CBP) stock of 3.8 million tons in Bulog’s warehouses indicates that Indonesia is on the right track towards food self-sufficiency by 2025.

According to Rizal, the amount of reserves ensures that Indonesia no longer needs to import rice.

This is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, which emphasized that imports are unnecessary because domestic production is believed to be capable of meeting national needs.

“So, the public need not worry or doubt that our rice stocks are sufficient and there is no need for further imports. Indonesian farmers are becoming more and more proficient and technologically advanced each year, resulting in significantly increased production,” he said.

Rizal added that, in addition to strong CBP stocks, national production is predicted to reach 34 million tons this year, a significant increase compared to the previous year.

He emphasized that this positive trend is a clear indicator that Indonesia has truly entered the food self-sufficiency phase.

“We all know that the President of the Republic of Indonesia has announced Indonesia’s food self-sufficiency at various international events, including the UN, the G20 Summit, and even at international summits. This demonstrates that Indonesia is already self-sufficient in food,” Rizal said.

The Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Pudji Ismartini, explained that this surge in production potential indicates serious improvements in the agricultural sector, both in terms of technology, fertilizer distribution, and improvements to irrigation systems.

“Potential rice production from January to December 2025 is estimated to reach 34.77 million tons, representing an increase of 4.15 million tons, or 13.54%, compared to the same period in 2024,” Pudji said.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman had previously reported to President Prabowo that Indonesia would achieve food self-sufficiency by the end of December 2025. He emphasized that the target had actually been achieved earlier than initially planned.

“God willing, on December 31 at 12:00, if there are no major disruptions, Indonesia will be self-sufficient in food,” said Amran.

According to him, this surge in production was due to a number of improvements, including targeted fertilizer distribution, irrigation improvements, the provision of agricultural machinery (alsintan), regulatory improvements, and the acceleration of new rice field development in various regions. The results are evident in the achievement of the highest rice production in history.

The availability of large rice reserves, significant increases in rice production, and consistent government policies to strengthen the food sector are now concrete evidence that Indonesia is truly on track to achieve food self-sufficiency by 2025.

The government also emphasized its commitment to maintaining production stability to ensure sustainable national food security.
