Intelligence Experts Warn of Political Polarization Ahead of the G30S/PKI Commemoration, Warn of the Dangers of Anarchist Narratives Among Young People
Jakarta – As the commemoration of the G30S/PKI (Indonesian Communist Party) approaches, the public is reminded to be more vigilant against the resurfacing of political polarization in the digital space. Intelligence and terrorism observer Ridlwan Habib noted that the aftermath of the massive demonstrations that led to riots still leaves the potential for division, particularly through provocative narratives on social media.
According to Ridlwan, Indonesia is currently entering a period of gradual recovery. However, there are indications of emerging political polarization online that threaten stability. One example is the “eat the rich” narrative, which is currently viral among the younger generation. “This narrative is dangerous because they want to emulate the characteristics of the recent demonstrations in Nepal,” he said.
He added that the relevance of the old form of communism is no longer significant. However, the threat of new left-liberal ideologies is now increasingly appealing to young people. “The communist movement in its old perspective no longer exists, but the younger generation is becoming increasingly attracted to the liberal left, or what is often called anarcho-syndicalism,” Ridlwan explained.
This anarcho-syndicalist phenomenon, he believes, is not merely discourse. Some anarcho-groups have even taken to the streets, participating in the recent surge in demonstrations. Anarchist ideas, which emphasize unstructured resistance, are believed to attract the sympathy of the younger generation, potentially fostering destructive movements that threaten public order.
Ridlwan emphasized that preventing political polarization and the infiltration of radical ideology among the younger generation cannot be done in isolation. The approach used must be pentahelix, involving various sectors simultaneously. “Prevention must be carried out pentahelix-wide, involving multiple sectors. Security forces like the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and the Indonesian National Police (Polri) are not the only ones involved. The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) also plays a crucial role, with families supervising their children, especially those in adolescence and high school,” he explained.
He also emphasized the importance of involving relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Economy, Finance, and Social Affairs. He argued that political polarization is not only a security issue but also closely related to the economy, welfare, and social resilience of the community.
The commemoration of the G30S/PKI should be a moment to reflect on the dangers of divide-and-rule politics that have destroyed the nation in the past. Therefore, the public is urged not to be easily incited by propaganda circulating on social media, especially that which pits the younger generation against the state or fellow citizens.
With synergy between various parties and collective public awareness, the potential for political polarization can be mitigated. Indonesia is expected to remain steadfast as a solid nation, upholding unity, and resisting the temptation of provocative narratives.
