Jakarta – Amidst a wave of widespread demonstrations, prominent religious figures and academics in Indonesia have united to call on the public to reject anarchic actions and express their aspirations peacefully. This call aligns with the government’s swift action to calm the situation, which is seen as a reflection of democratic maturity.

President Prabowo Subianto took a proactive step by inviting interfaith figures to the Presidential Palace. The meeting aimed to find a joint solution and pray for the nation to return to a conducive situation.

Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), KH Marsudi Syuhud, appreciated the President’s move, calling it something no other country has.

“Although religion commands us to impart truth to one another, we must convey it with patience,” said Marsudi.

Various religious representatives voiced messages of peace. Pastor Johnny Lokollo, advisor to the Bethel Injili Nusantara Church, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and the community.

“We pray that the situation in our country will be conducive, that the people will be calm, and that all state officials will understand what the people need,” said Johnny.

Similarly, the General Chairperson of the Central Indonesian Hindu Dharma Council (PHDI), Wisnu Bawa Tenaya, invited all people to unite.

“Let us call out that Indonesia remains united. Let us pray for Indonesia’s happiness,” he stressed.

University of Indonesia (UI) Political Communication Expert, Aditya Perdana, highlighted that demonstrations are part of democratic rights, but he emphasized that destructive and anarchic actions will result in losses for the wider community.

“When the methods are destructive and anarchic, they naturally have unintended consequences, including damage to public facilities. Ultimately, the public suffers because they cannot enjoy public facilities,” he said.

According to Aditya, anarchic actions often arise from excessive expression of aspirations. This can lead to public distrust. Therefore, he believes President Prabowo Subianto’s swift action in inviting religious leaders and community organizations was a very appropriate response.

“The President’s swift response was the right thing to do, as this must be handled very seriously and with swift action,” he added.

He also stressed the importance for public officials to show empathy and take concrete steps, beyond just apologies.

This call for peace from religious figures and academics demonstrates a strong consensus among various elements of the nation to reject division. Dialogic steps initiated by the government have built a solid bridge of trust and strengthened the nation’s foundation in facing future challenges.
