Investment in the Assembly of Red and White Kopdes Commercial Vehicles in Indonesia Strengthens the Domestic Economy

JAKARTA – The planned assembly of commercial vehicles for the Red and White Village Cooperative (Kopdes) program in Indonesia is a strategic step in strengthening the domestic economy. Following the commercial vehicle import phase to meet the program’s initial needs, the policy direction has now shifted to developing a domestic production base, which will have a direct impact on the national industry.

Mahindra, the Indian automotive manufacturer, is reportedly preparing to build an assembly facility in Subang, West Java. The location was chosen due to its proximity to Patimban Port, which has been developing as an automotive logistics hub. This location allows for distribution efficiency and opens up opportunities for integration with the local component industry.

Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota, President Director of PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, stated that the plan has entered the concrete stages. “Mahindra plans to begin production in Indonesia between 2027 and 2028, in accordance with the agreed contract,” said Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota.

The statement affirmed a medium-term investment commitment that is not only focused on meeting the need for village operational vehicles but also on strengthening the national industrial structure. Previously, Agrinas imported 70,000 commercial vehicles from Tata Motors to support the acceleration of the Red and White Village Cooperatives (Kopdes Merah Putih) program. Now, domestic assembly is projected to become a new driver of economic growth.

The influx of assembly investment opens up opportunities for increasing the domestic component content (TKDN). Supporting industries such as spare parts manufacturers, logistics, and distribution services have the potential to directly benefit. Thus, economic value-added extends beyond vehicle sales transactions to various sectors.

Mahindra had previously supplied 35,000 pickup trucks for the program. This experience served as the basis for expanding the collaboration by building a production facility. This partnership model is considered more constructive because it encourages knowledge transfer, creates jobs, and strengthens the competitiveness of the national automotive industry.

In addition to factory construction, strengthening the domestic economy is also supported by the development of an after-sales service network. “Yes, investment commitments. In addition to building factories, they are now building workshops throughout Indonesia and distributors,” added Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota.

Expanding workshops and distributors will ensure village operational vehicles remain productive, especially in areas with challenging geographic conditions. A well-developed service network also creates new business opportunities in the regions, while expanding the local economic ecosystem.

With this strategy, the Red and White Village Cooperatives program serves not only as a provider of commercial transportation but also as a driver of national industry. Domestic assembly of commercial vehicles symbolizes the transformation from dependence on imports to strengthening a production-based economy.

This step fosters optimism that the automotive sector can play a greater role in supporting national economic growth. Integrating industrial investment, village empowerment, and supply chain strengthening provides a solid foundation for sustainable economic independence.
