ISF 2024 Opens, a Key Moment for Global Sustainability Action
Jakarta – The Indonesia Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024 officially opened today at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta (5/9), marking a significant step in global efforts towards sustainable development and energy transition. The event, attended by more than thousands of participants from dozens of countries, is an important platform for dialogue, innovation, and collaboration in facing the pressing challenges of the climate crisis.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, in his opening speech, underlined the relevance of this forum to current global conditions.
“ISF 2024 will not only discuss the challenges of the climate crisis, but also become a platform for innovation, collaboration and hope,” he said.
This speech reflects Indonesia’s determination to take a strategic position in global sustainability efforts.
Luhut explained that this forum was held in Indonesia with its friendly tropical climate, welcoming participants from various countries to jointly seek solutions to environmental problems.
“Indonesia is leading sustainable development through reforestation and renewable energy investment. The President will announce renewable energy achievements, which are twice the current electricity capacity. This initiative protects the environment, empowers communities, and maintains the right to grow and prosper,” he said.
In this context, Luhut also emphasized that Indonesia is leading sustainable development through reforestation and renewable energy investment.
On the same occasion, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) emphasized that solving the problem of climate change will not be achieved if the world still uses an economic approach that only calculates profits and prioritizes the ego of each country.
“Solving this problem requires a collaborative and humane approach, between developed and developing countries, without sacrificing the interests of the people,” he stressed.
This statement highlights the need for global understanding and cooperation in addressing the climate challenge.
President Jokowi also emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions and contributing to the world, with its abundant renewable energy potential.
“Indonesia is committed to achieving net-zero emissions and contributing to the world, with abundant renewable energy potential, such as floating solar power plants in the Cirata Reservoir and the largest mangrove forest in the world,” he said.
This affirmation shows that Indonesia is not only trying to reduce carbon emissions, but also protecting and utilizing its natural resources.
In this forum, it was also announced that President Jokowi will announce the achievement of renewable energy which has reached twice the current electricity capacity. This is a symbol of Indonesia’s success in investing in green energy and transitioning to a sustainable economy.
“Indonesia’s mangrove forests, which are the largest in the world, have a much better carbon absorption capacity than tropical rainforests,” the President explained.
The president added that progress in addressing climate change would be difficult to achieve if developed countries did not invest.
“Indonesia is open to partnering with anyone to maximize the potential of green energy, encourage inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” he said.
The forum will feature plenary sessions, thematic discussions and high-level dialogues involving ministers from neighboring countries and top world CEOs. One of the key moments of the forum will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on energy transition and sustainability, which is expected to strengthen the shared commitment to creating a greener future.
