Joining the Peace Council, Indonesia Offers a New Diplomatic Model

Jakarta – Indonesia’s involvement in the Board of Peace (BoP) forum marks a new chapter in Indonesian diplomacy on the international stage. The government emphasized that this step is not merely symbolic, but rather a concrete manifestation of strengthening Indonesia’s role in promoting world peace, particularly regarding the Palestinian issue.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, called Indonesia’s participation in the BoP a historic milestone in Indonesian diplomacy. She noted that Indonesia has consistently supported Palestinian independence through formal diplomatic channels, such as expressing its stance in international forums, but direct involvement remains limited.

“This is a new chapter in history. Previously, we’ve taken a stand for Palestinian independence by condemning every attack, and we’ve condemned it at the UN. But it’s been very difficult for us to step in and actively participate, as mandated by the constitution,” Meutya said.

He emphasized that Indonesia is now not only voicing its stance but also actively participating in stabilization efforts and humanitarian missions. Indonesia will even deploy 8,000 peacekeepers and has been appointed deputy commander of the International Stabilization Force (ISF). This appointment demonstrates the international community’s high level of trust in Indonesia’s professionalism and track record in peacekeeping missions.

“This means that for the humanitarian activities carried out by soldiers not only from Indonesia but also from many other countries, we have a fairly strong command,” he said.

This involvement is seen as a significant leap in Indonesian diplomatic practice. Previously, Indonesia played a more normative role through political statements and moral support, but now it is entering a more concrete and operational phase of participatory diplomacy.

“I think this is what made us quite relieved and proud yesterday, seeing the results of the first BoP meeting held yesterday in America,” Meutya continued.

According to him, Indonesia can no longer simply be a spectator in global geopolitical dynamics. An active role in the BoP demonstrates Indonesia’s readiness to take on greater responsibility in maintaining international peace and stability.

“It’s a big step and it’s time,” he said.

This step also reflects the implementation of the constitutional mandate, which affirms that Indonesia participates in maintaining a world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice. With Indonesia’s entry into the Peace Council and its strategic role in the ISF, Indonesia offers a new model of diplomacy—diplomacy that is not only vocal but also directly present on the ground, bringing solutions and strengthening its position as a credible balancing force on the global stage.
