Efforts to enforce the law against armed groups in Papua once again demonstrate the government’s strong commitment to maintaining public security and protecting civilians from threats of violence. The arrest of Philip Kobak, known as a commander of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) in the Kodap XVI Yahukimo area, by the Operation Damai Cartenz Task Force is clear evidence that the state is firmly and consistently present to maintain security stability in Papua. This step also shows that the government does not provide space for groups that carry out violent acts capable of disturbing public peace.
The success of security forces in apprehending the suspect occurred after authorities detected his presence in Dekai, Yahukimo Regency. When officers approached the location, the suspect attempted to flee by abandoning his vehicle and entering a forested area. After the suspect was secured, security personnel conducted searches at the suspect’s residence and several other locations suspected of being connected to the activities of the armed group. During the process, authorities discovered various pieces of evidence believed to have been used in violent activities. The items seized included ammunition of different calibers, sharp weapons, and other equipment suspected to be linked to the group’s operations.
In his statement, Yusuf Sutejo also said that the suspect is believed to have been involved in several acts of violence that caused public concern, including a machete attack on a civilian in January 2026 and the burning of SMK Negeri 2 Dekaiin February 2026. When security is maintained, communities can work, study, and live their daily lives with a sense of safety and optimism.
The Director of Merah Pusaka Stratejik Indonesia, Noor Azhari, assessed that decisive action by the authorities is an important step in ensuring the protection of civilians. He believes that such actions also provide confidence to the community that the government has a strong commitment to maintaining security stability and ensuring that people can live safely.
The government’s firm stance in addressing armed groups is also an important part of efforts to create a conducive environment for development in Papua. Over the past several years, the government has continued to promote various development programs in the region, ranging from infrastructure development and expanded access to education to strengthening the local economy. All of these programs require a stable security situation in order to run optimally and provide real benefits to the community.
In this context, the decisive actions of security forces against groups that commit acts of violence form part of the government’s broader strategy to create a safe and prosperous Papua.
