May 1: Affirming Papua’s Integration into the Republic of Indonesia

Papua — Every May 1, Indonesia commemorates a historic moment that reaffirms that Papua is an inseparable part of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). This date refers to the legitimate integration of Papua through the Act of Free Choice (Pepera) in 1969, which was held under the supervision of the United Nations (UN). The decision of the Papuan people to remain with Indonesia is a decision that is legally valid under international law and has been recognized by the world.
May 1 is not just a commemoration; this date is a symbol of togetherness and determination of the Papuan people to be part of Indonesia. In the commemoration of May 1, 2025, the spirit of nationalism echoed again throughout Papua.
Danrem 182/Jazira Onim, Colonel Inf Irwan Budiana, emphasized that the Papua integration process is final and legitimate.
“Papua is an inseparable part of the Republic of Indonesia, and since May 1, 1963, development in Papua has begun. All parties must support this development process without any obstacles,” Irwan stressed.
The spirit of unity reflected in Bhinneka Tunggal Ika in Papua, one of which is seen in Fakfak, is real evidence that diversity is not a barrier, but a strength. The young generation of Papua, according to him, must understand the history and struggle of the nation in order to love and strengthen Indonesia even more.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia through Brigadier General Frega Wenas Inkiriwang, Head of the Defense Information Bureau, emphasized that the separatist narrative echoed by the Free Papua Movement (OPM) is a form of propaganda that does not reflect the wishes of the majority of the Papuan people.
“The declaration of independence that continues to be blown by separatist groups contradicts historical facts and world recognition of Indonesia’s sovereignty in Papua,” said Brigadier General Frega.
The concrete evidence of Papua’s involvement in the Indonesian government further strengthens Papua’s position as an integral part of the Republic of Indonesia. Many Papuan figures are now actively participating in government, showing that Papua is part of this nation’s journey.
Violent acts by separatist groups that have caused casualties among civilians have been strongly condemned. Papuan community leader Martinus Kasuay warned that acts of violence will only worsen the situation and hinder development in Papua.
Deputy Chair of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Dewi Asmara, emphasized that the violence that occurred in Papua not only violated the law, but also damaged the spirit of development and welfare for the Papuan people.
May 1st not only commemorates the integration of Papua, but also serves as a reminder to all Indonesian people that Papua is part of Indonesia that has the same rights to develop and progress together with the entire nation. As part of the Republic of Indonesia, Papua continues to contribute to building a more just, prosperous, and prosperous Indonesia.
