Jakarta -Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Board (PP Muhammadiyah) Dadang Kahmad expressed his support for the proposal to grant Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, the title of National Hero.

He stated that Soeharto was an important figure in Indonesia’s history who deserves recognition for his dedication and contributions during both the independence struggle and his years of national leadership.

“We support Mr. Soeharto as a National Hero because he made tremendous contributions to the Republic of Indonesia, from the revolutionary period to the era of national development,” Dadang said.

PP Muhammadiyah Chairman Muhadjir Effendy reaffirmed that Muhammadiyah’s stance is one of full support for granting the National Hero title to Soeharto. He emphasized that no one can deny Soeharto’s contributions to the nation.

“As Mr. Dadang (Kahmad, Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah) has already stated, Muhammadiyah fully supports the conferment of the National Hero title on Mr. Harto,” Muhadjir told reporters in Menteng, Central Jakarta, Thursday (November 6, 2025).

Muhadjir explained that this position is consistent with Muhammadiyah’s stance in 2012, when Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, was also proposed for the same honor. According to him, both Soekarno and Soeharto made significant, undeniable contributions to the nation’s history.

Meanwhile, Professor Marsuki of Hasanuddin University described Soeharto as one of the nation’s finest sons to have ever served as president of Indonesia.

Despite lingering controversies, Marsuki noted that Soeharto made substantial contributions to Indonesia’s development and economic growth throughout his tenure.

“For more than 30 years of leadership, with the extensive development he carried out, he is indeed very deserving of the National Hero title,” Marsuki said on Thursday (November 6, 2025).

He added that Soeharto’s administration was marked by economic stability, controlled inflation, and growth that positioned Indonesia as one of the best-performing economies in the region.
