Jakarta-Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for Fatwas, Asrorun Niam Sholeh, stated that all former presidents of Indonesia deserve to be granted the title of National Hero without exception. According to him, every leader who has guided the nation is a hero in their own right — including Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto.

“Pak Karno, Pak Harto, Pak Habibie, and Gus Dur (Abdurrahman Wahid) are all national leaders who deserve to be recognized as heroes,” said Niam in Jakarta, Thursday, November 6, 2025.

Niam made the statement in response to Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf’s submission of 40 names proposed to receive the National Hero title.

“I think that’s a positive step. A great nation is one that honors its heroes. The inclusion of figures from diverse backgrounds shows President Prabowo’s statesmanship in embracing unity and fostering national harmony,” he added.

He explained that a great nation is defined by its ability to appreciate its heroes — including those who once led and dedicated their lives to the service of the country.

“Heroes’ Day, commemorated every November 10, is meant to remember those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s progress. In Islam, we are commanded to honor and remember the good deeds of those who have passed away, especially leaders who made real contributions and sowed goodness for their people,” Niam emphasized.

According to him, Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto, who led the nation for decades, undeniably brought progress to the country.

“Islam commands us to remember his good deeds,” Niam added.

At the same time, Irma Suryani Chaniago, Chairwoman of the NasDem Party’s Executive Board (DPP NasDem), also voiced support for granting Soeharto the title of National Hero. Irma stated that under Soeharto’s leadership, Indonesia experienced peace and political stability.

“NasDem, through our Deputy Chairman Mr. Saan Mustopa, has previously stated that we agree with granting the National Hero title to former president Soeharto,” Irma told reporters on Thursday (November 6, 2025).

She noted that Soeharto left behind many positive legacies during his presidency. While acknowledging that public debate is natural, she urged people to view his contributions objectively.

“In our view, during his time in office, he left behind many positive legacies for Indonesia. Differences of opinion are normal, but we should also recognize the good things he accomplished in leading this nation,” Irma concluded.
