Nation Appreciates the Conferment of National Hero Title to Indonesia’s Second President, Soeharto

Jakarta — The conferment of the National Hero title to Indonesia’s 2nd President, Soeharto, on Heroes’ Day, November 10, 2025, has received widespread appreciation and support from religious leaders, national organization figures, and government officials. This decision is seen as a state tribute to a leader who made significant contributions to Indonesia’s progress.

Ahmad Muzani, Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), expressed his appreciation for the government’s decision:

“We convey our gratitude and respect for President Soeharto’s dedication in maintaining national unity and laying the foundation for the nation’s development. He played a vital role in Indonesia’s history. This conferment is the state’s tribute to one of the nation’s finest sons,” he said.

Support also came from Gus Fahrur (Ahmad Fahrur Rozi), Head of Religious Affairs at PBNU, who described Soeharto as a decisive leader with a strong commitment to nationalism and tangible contributions to the state:

“He played a key role in maintaining national stability, ensuring food sovereignty, and strengthening the economy. This is a fitting decision. We express our appreciation and thanks to the government for this conferment,” he stated.

Dadang Kahmad, Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah, emphasized that many development achievements from Soeharto’s era continue to benefit society today:

“Soeharto contributed greatly to Indonesia. Many development programs he initiated are still beneficial and form the foundation of the nation. We support and appreciate the conferment of the National Hero title,” he said.

Asrorun Niam Sholeh, Head of the Fatwa Division at MUI, highlighted that the award is a recognition of a leader’s long-standing dedication to the country:

“This conferment is the state’s recognition of a figure with a proven record of service. We appreciate this decision as part of honoring the nation’s history and struggles,” he explained.

From the political sphere, Irma Suryani Chaniago, Chair of DPP NasDem, noted that the title symbolizes that the nation does not forget the contributions of its leaders:

“The development legacy left by Soeharto is still felt today. We express our thanks and support for the conferment of the National Hero title to him,” she said.

Saifullah Yusuf, Minister of Social Affairs, who led the Heroes’ Day commemoration, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to honoring its finest sons and daughters:

“This conferment is a form of the state’s appreciation and gratitude for his dedication and service to the nation. May it become an example for future generations,” he said.

With the support of national figures and society at large, the conferment of the National Hero title to President Soeharto serves as an important moment to remind the younger generation that nation-building requires dedication, hard work, and exemplary leadership.
