The governments of Indonesia and the United States have agreed to complete reciprocal import tariff negotiations within 60 days.

This agreement was reached as a prompt response to the high tariff policy announced by U.S. President Donald Trump in early April.

“Indonesia and the United States have agreed to conclude the negotiations within 60 days,” said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto during a virtual press conference from Washington, D.C.

Airlangga explained that both countries have approved the terms of reference and the scope of discussions.

The negotiation topics include trade and investment partnerships, strengthening cooperation on critical minerals, and supply chain resilience.

“We hope that within 60 days, the framework will be followed up with a formal agreement between Indonesia and the United States,” he added.

During the working visit to the U.S., the Indonesian delegation held meetings with several top American officials, including Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

A meeting with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to take place soon.

“The Indonesian government has actively engaged with relevant U.S. officials,” Airlangga stated.

On the other hand, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized the importance of bilateral economic cooperation during his meeting with Rubio.

“We are pushing to strengthen strategic partnerships, especially in supply chains and critical minerals such as nickel,” said Sugiono.

He added that he also conveyed President Prabowo Subianto’s key development priorities outlined in Astacita, including food and energy security, downstream industrialization, and human capital development, as part of efforts to attract U.S. investment.

Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso noted that Indonesia’s technical team has been invited by the USTR to discuss the format and schedule of negotiations.

“Indonesia hopes to finalize the format, mechanism, and negotiation timeline with a 60-day target,” said Susi.

He added that technical issues to be addressed include non-tariff barriers, sectoral tariffs, and market access.

“Both parties are pushing for swift dialogue to reach an agreement as soon as possible,” he concluded.
