Observers Warn of the Dangers of Provocative Narratives on Social Media Ahead of the G30S Commemoration
Jakarta — Intelligence and terrorism observer Ridlwan Habib has warned the public to be more vigilant against the emergence of provocative narratives that have recently become widespread in the public sphere, particularly on social media. This warning follows the aftermath of large demonstrations that led to riots, as Indonesia enters a gradual recovery period.
According to Ridlwan, the recovery process cannot be merely symbolic; it must be comprehensive and accommodate the various demands of the community. “If not handled seriously, the remaining disappointment could be exploited by certain groups by spreading provocative issues,” he said.
One emerging phenomenon is the “eat the rich” narrative, which is circulating widely on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, especially among the younger generation. Ridlwan said this narrative is dangerous because it mimics the pattern of the protests in Nepal, which were sparked by economic inequality. By highlighting the glamorous lifestyles of officials’ children amidst the economic hardship of the people, there are concerns that it will lead to social segregation, class clashes, and even the mistaken belief that all wealthy people are at odds with the values of Pancasila.
Ridlwan also emphasized the importance of community leaders in providing enlightenment. He considered President Prabowo’s move to invite senior figures through the National Conscience Movement commendable, but said a liaison or middleman was still needed. “There must be an effective communication bridge with Gen Z so that aspirations can be channeled healthily and not manipulated by extreme narratives,” he explained.
Regarding the issue of communism that frequently surfaced towards the end of September, Ridlwan stated that the movement’s patterns have now changed. According to him, the old form of communism no longer exists, but the younger generation is instead attracted to left-liberal or anarcho-syndicalist ideas. This ideology rejects the legal system and the role of the state, advocating absolute equality without any government structure. Some anarcho-groups have even been actively involved in recent demonstrations.
Therefore, Ridlwan reminded the government to remain vigilant against “wild ideas” developing among young people. He emphasized the importance of activating the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Early Warning Forums in all provinces. “If these forums are optimally implemented in the lead-up to September 30th and October 1st, potential vulnerabilities can be mitigated early,” he emphasized.
Ridlwan concluded by appealing to the public to remain calm, not to be easily provoked by rumors, and to work together to maintain national unity at this sensitive moment leading up to the commemoration of the G30S.
