Jakarta – The Indonesia Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024 officially opened today, September 5, 2024, marking Indonesia’s commitment to transform sustainability rhetoric into real action. The event, attended by more than 11,000 participants from 53 countries, is an important forum for stakeholders to engage in dialogue, share innovations, and formulate strategic steps in addressing the global climate crisis.
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in his speech emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach to addressing climate change. “Solving this problem requires a collaborative and humane approach, between developed and developing countries, without sacrificing the interests of the people,” said Jokowi. This statement emphasized the need for global understanding in facing environmental challenges.
In this forum, President Jokowi also emphasized that climate change will not be resolved if the world still uses an economic approach that only calculates profits and prioritizes the ego of each country.
“Solving this problem requires a collaborative and humane approach, between developed and developing countries, without sacrificing the interests of the people,” he said.
President Jokowi highlighted that a green economy is not only about protecting the environment, but also creating sustainable prosperity for the people.
In addition, President Jokowi also showed the world that Indonesia is committed to achieving net-zero emissions and contributing to the world.
“Indonesia is committed to achieving net-zero emissions and contributing to the world, with abundant renewable energy potential, such as floating solar power plants in the Cirata Reservoir and the world’s largest mangrove forest. Indonesia’s mangrove forests, which are the largest in the world, have a much better carbon absorption capacity than tropical rainforests,” he said.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, on the same occasion stated that ISF 2024 will not only discuss the challenges of the climate crisis, but also be a platform for innovation, collaboration, and hope.
“This forum is very relevant to the current global conditions related to sustainability issues. As a developing country, Indonesia has a unique narrative and an important role in supporting global climate action,” he explained.
Luhut stressed that Indonesia is leading sustainable development through reforestation and renewable energy investment,
“This initiative protects the environment, empowers communities, and defends the right to grow and prosper. Every country has a different starting point in the energy transition, so collaboration is key in the sustainability agenda,” he added.
The forum also marked the launch of several initiatives aimed at encouraging investment in renewable energy and sustainable practices.
ISF 2024 will feature plenary sessions, thematic discussions and high-level dialogues involving ministers from neighboring countries and top global CEOs. One of the key moments of the forum will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on energy transition and sustainability.
