Papuan Community Unity is a Pillar of Peace and Prosperity
PAPUA – Papua is now displaying a new face of peace thanks to the close synergy between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), local governments, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and the community. Various concrete steps continue to be taken, from consolidating security forces, strengthening the role of traditional leaders, to providing central government assistance that directly addresses the needs of residents. All of these efforts emphasize that peace in Papua is not just a slogan, but the result of real collaboration across all sectors.
The conducive situation is clearly visible in Agats City, Asmat Regency. Following the riots, a major consolidation led by the Asmat Regent on September 29, 2025, became a crucial momentum for strengthening stability. The Head of Public Relations for the Papua Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Cahyo Sukarni, stated that joint TNI-Polri officers are now conducting regular, intensive patrols, while the local government is encouraging reconciliation with traditional and community leaders.
“The public is urged to maintain order, use social media wisely, and not be easily provoked,” he stressed.
Efforts to strengthen harmony are also evident in South Sorong through the establishment of a customary judge institution. Altius Thesia, Head of the Tehit Tribe’s LMA, believes the existence of customary judges is crucial for mitigating horizontal conflict.
“Traditional judges are respected figures trusted by the community. Their role is strategic in maintaining unity and preventing conflict,” he said.
In Puncak Jaya, business assistance in the form of piglets was distributed to church leaders. Pastor Lenis Kogoya of the Yamo Region GIDI confirmed that the support was very beneficial.
“This assistance demonstrates the government’s concern for the lives of the congregation while also supporting the family economy,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Meepago Traditional Council, Wolter Belau, also expressed his appreciation for the central government’s support. “We are grateful for the assistance in home renovations, electricity installations, and embankment construction. National programs like the MBG and the Merah Putih Cooperative will bring a bright future to Papua,” he said.
The community has also felt the direct benefits of this togetherness. Lumo tribal chief Minangen Wonda expressed his gratitude for President Prabowo Subianto’s assistance in the form of building a honai (house), livestock pens, and communication equipment.
“This step truly touches on the basic needs of mountain communities,” he said.
The presence of security forces with a humanistic approach also further fosters public trust. The Tolikara Police regularly conduct dialogue patrols to engage with residents, while the Yonif 500/Sikatan Task Force in Intan Jaya builds rapport with the community through lunches.
The synergy between the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), the regional government, and the Papuan people is now a crucial pillar for stability and sustainable development. The peace that comes from togetherness is believed to be a strong foundation for Papua’s continued progress, prosperity, and competitiveness.
