Papuan Figures Call for Peace, Firmly Reject OPM Anniversary Commemoration

Papua- The determination of July 1 as the anniversary of the TPN-OPM has again drawn strong rejection because it is considered to revive the separatist narrative that is damaging national unity. One of the central figures of the indigenous community, Yanto Eluay, stated firmly that the commemoration does not reflect the noble values of the indigenous Papuan people who uphold peace and brotherhood.
In his official statement, Yanto Eluay said that separatist movements such as TPN-OPM are considered not to represent the aspirations of indigenous people who currently support the presence of the state to develop the Land of Papua. He considered that glorification of the group would actually prolong the conflict and hinder the progress of development in the Land of Papua.
“As a Papuan traditional figure, I convey a firm stance that we reject July 1 as the anniversary of TPN-OPM. That date does not reflect the noble values of the indigenous people who love peace and brotherhood,” said Yanto Eluay
Yanto added that Papuan people currently long for a safe, peaceful, and prosperous life. According to him, the best way to build Papua’s future is not through violence, but by strengthening the education, health, and people’s economy sectors.
“We do not want our children and grandchildren to continue living in the shadow of conflict. We want to build the Land of Papua together with education and health programs that have been facilitated by the central and regional governments, not with weapons and violence,” he said.
Furthermore, Yanto emphasized that the indigenous Papuan people are in line with the government’s spirit in maintaining harmony and peace throughout the archipelago. He rejected all forms of narratives that could divide the nation, and invited the young generation of Papua to be wise in responding to various developing issues.
“Papua is a land of peace, not a land of conflict. Let us guard this country with a sincere heart and a clear mind. We reject July 1 as the anniversary of TPN-OPM. We choose peace. Papua is Indonesia,” he said.
Yanto Eluay hopes that the central and regional governments will continue to be at the forefront in maintaining the stability of Papua, for the welfare of the entire community. According to him, this stability is the main prerequisite for accelerating development and improving the welfare of the community in a land rich in resources and culture {}
