Jakarta – The commemoration of Heroes’ Day on November 10, 2025, became a historic moment for the Indonesian nation. The government officially conferred the title of National Hero upon the late Soeharto, the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia. This decision was warmly welcomed with appreciation and gratitude by various groups across society, including religious leaders and community organizations.

Former Chairman of Muhammadiyah, Din Syamsuddin, stated that the conferral of the title was a highly appropriate and meaningful decision. He noted that although this recognition came decades after Soeharto’s leadership, the government’s decision aligns with the values of historical justice and acknowledgment of his great contributions.

“From the bottom of my heart and mind, I truly believe that designating President Soeharto as a National Hero is very, very appropriate, even if it comes late,” said Din Syamsuddin.

According to Din, Soeharto was a leader deeply committed to national development and the welfare of the people. He added that during more than three decades of leadership, Soeharto succeeded in laying the foundations of economic growth and national stability.

“He was a leader devoted to building the nation and the state, with sincere dedication and tangible work for the people,” Din emphasized.

Appreciation also came from Dr. TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Atsani, Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Wathan (PBNW) and grandson of National Hero TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid from West Nusa Tenggara. He said the conferral of the title was not only an acknowledgment of Soeharto’s personal legacy but also a symbol of historical reconciliation that reinforces the spirit of national unity.

“Soeharto is known for his role in the 1 March 1949 General Offensive in Yogyakarta, which was crucial in defending Indonesia’s sovereignty against the Dutch,” said Zainuddin.

He added that Soeharto’s great services were not only reflected in his physical struggle during the independence period but also in his leadership through economic, educational, and national resilience policies.

According to Zainuddin, the government’s decision to award Soeharto the National Hero title deserves deep gratitude, as it shows that the Indonesian nation does not forget the contributions of its leaders who fought for independence and national progress.

“On behalf of Nahdlatul Wathan, we express our highest gratitude and appreciation to the government. This is a form of respect for history and for Pak Harto’s immense service to the Indonesian nation,” he affirmed.

The conferral of this title was also warmly welcomed by various elements of society. Many viewed it as an important momentum to strengthen national values, unity, and respect for the contributions of the nation’s figures.

Through this Heroes’ Day moment, people hope that the spirit of service and exemplary leadership of past figures will inspire the younger generation. For indeed, a great nation is one that honors the services of its heroes and continues their struggle in building a more advanced, just, and prosperous Indonesia.
