People’s Schools: The Government’s Real Effort to Eliminate Social Inequality for the Nation’s Children

Jakarta – The government, through the Ministry of Social Affairs, has urged the public not to hastily judge the health complaints of Elementary School students as a failure of the program. Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf emphasized that all student admissions are conducted with parental consent and based on health screening results.

“No one is forced. Everything is done with parental permission and through a selection process. The People’s School is not coercion; it’s a choice for children’s future,” Gus Ipul emphasized on Friday (July 25, 2025).

Several students appeared enthusiastic about adapting to new activities, although some experienced stomach aches. Gus Ipul explained that this adaptation reflected the economic circumstances of most of the students.

“They used to only eat once a day. Now they eat three times a day, plus two snacks. This is a normal physical adaptation process,” he said.

The school also anticipates potential health problems during the adaptation period.

“We’ve provided a team of doctors and psychologists. If anyone is sick, they’ll be treated immediately,” said Fitri Puspita Sari, Head of SRMP 10 Bogor.

He stated that seven students were absent from the dinner with the Minister of Social Affairs due to mild symptoms such as nausea, flu, and chickenpox. However, the majority of students were in good health and fully participating in teaching and learning activities.

One of the students, Asya Asyifa, said she was very grateful to be able to return to school.

“Thank God, I can eat three meals here. But sometimes I think about my parents; they probably only eat once,” she said softly.

A positive response came from the community who witnessed the program’s impact firsthand. Residents around the Inten Soeweno Integrated Center welcomed the presence of the People’s School as a new hope.

“These children must be cared for not only with food, but also with love and attention,” said Fitri.

The government is committed to continuing to improve this program.

“We know it’s not perfect. But this is a real effort. The People’s School provides opportunities for children who have dropped out of school to return to learning, with adequate facilities,” Gus Ipul emphasized.

He reiterated the importance of ensuring students grow and dream big.

“This isn’t about whether food is good or not; it’s about children’s rights to grow up healthy, learn, and dream big,” he stressed.
