Pope Francis: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Motto Reflects Reality of Diversity in Indonesia
Jakarta – The Supreme Leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis praised Indonesia’s motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. The motto reflects the reality of diversity in Indonesia. He conveyed this during his apostolic visit to the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Wednesday (4/9).
“Your national motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, united in diversity, literally means different but still one, expressing the multifaceted reality of peoples firmly united in one nation,” Pope Francis said.
The Pope assessed that Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, the motto of Indonesia contained in the national symbol Garuda Pancasila reflects the diversity of natural wealth in Indonesia. Natural conditions are also reflected in the culture of Indonesian society.
“Your differences contribute in particular to the formation of a vast mosaic, where each ceramic is an irreplaceable element in creating an authentic and precious masterpiece,” the Pope said.
According to the Pope, each religious group has good intentions and serves the common good. It was created after all the needs of each element were considered.
“Solidarity is an essential element and everyone has a role to play, helping to identify appropriate solutions to avoid the irritation that arises from differences, and to transform resistance into effective cooperation,” the Pope said.
Solidarity in diversity creates a balanced harmony. However, this balance is prone to breaking because of the many elements in it. Ideals that strengthen unity must be continuously defended from various inequalities.
“This is a work of skill entrusted to everyone, but in a special way to those involved in political life who must fight for harmony, equality, respect for fundamental human rights,” the Pope concluded.
