Prabowo Attends First BRICS Summit as Full Member, Highlights Global Peace and Security Issues
Rio De Janeiro – President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto officially attended the 2025 BRICS Summit in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, as a representative of Indonesia which has just become a full member of the forum since the beginning of the year. This involvement is an important momentum for Indonesia to strengthen its position in international cooperation, especially in strategic issues such as global peace, security, and cutting-edge technology.
Taking place at the Modern Art Museum (MAM) Aterro do Flamengo, the series of BRICS Summit activities began Sunday morning local time. President Prabowo together with the heads of state of BRICS members are scheduled to attend a number of main agendas, including the first plenary session entitled “Peace and Security and Global Governance Reform”.
President Prabowo’s presence in this session is not only symbolic, but also reflects Indonesia’s commitment to being part of the solution to various global challenges. “Indonesia is here to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, especially in facing increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics,” said one of the members of the Indonesian delegation.
After the first plenary session, the heads of state continued with lunch and a closed working meeting to deepen discussions on global peace and governance. The agenda continued in the afternoon with the official arrival of heads of delegations from partner countries and international organizations, and the second plenary themed “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence.”
The issue of artificial intelligence was one of the important highlights in this forum. The Indonesian government believes that technology development must be carried out ethically and inclusively. “AI must be a tool that advances humanity, not just benefits a handful of parties,” was the government’s view conveyed through the official broadcast of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In the evening, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva welcomed the delegates at an official closed reception. Meanwhile, the media covering the event were provided with complete facilities at the Vivo Rio Concert Hall Media Center, only 10 meters from the main location of the meeting.
President Prabowo did not attend this prestigious forum alone. He was accompanied by a number of high-ranking officials, including Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arrmanatha Nasir. The presence of this delegation shows Indonesia’s seriousness in voicing national interests and the Global South region.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its statement emphasized that Indonesia views BRICS as a strategic forum to fight for a more inclusive and just global order. “This forum opens up a large space for developing countries to play a more active role in global decision-making, including in the fields of economics, education, finance, and technology,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on its official website.
The agenda for the second day of the BRICS Summit, which will be held on Monday (7/7), will focus on the themes of the environment, COP30, and global health—issues that are also priorities for Indonesia in promoting sustainable development.
Carrying the grand theme of “Strengthening Global South Cooperation to a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”, the 2025 BRICS Summit is an important arena for Indonesia to strengthen diplomacy and build strategic partnerships to realize a more equal world order.
