President Officially Launches People’s School, an Inclusive Education Facility for All Segments of Society
JAKARTA — President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated the People’s School Program, which delivers quality education designed to embrace all segments of society.
The launch of the program underscores a strong commitment to vulnerable groups while breaking the cycle of poverty through human capital development starting from school age.
The People’s School is designed as a formal boarding school spanning elementary to senior high school levels, with all students’ needs fully covered by the state.
Children from underprivileged families gain access to education, accommodation, nutritious meals, healthcare services, uniforms, and comprehensive character development.
This approach positions education as a gateway to sustainable social transformation.
Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf emphasized that the People’s School was born out of the President’s concern for communities that have long been left behind in the development process.
“They are then provided with access, accommodation, and the opportunity to pursue education in a quality environment, while their parents receive empowerment programs,” he said.
“Because this is part of poverty alleviation. The children go to school, the families are empowered. When the children graduate, the families move up and become self-reliant. This is extraordinary and will certainly be a legacy of President Prabowo,” said Gus Ipul.
By the end of 2025, the government recorded that 166 pilot People’s Schools were operating across various regions.
The program reaches nearly 16,000 students with the support of thousands of teachers and education personnel.
Evaluations by the Ministry of Social Affairs indicate significant improvements in students’ health and academic development, thanks to the boarding system and measured nutritional provision.
The Principal of People’s Junior High School 13 Kupang, Felipina Agustina Kale, assessed the People’s School as a true reflection of social justice.
“In my view, this is social justice for all Indonesians. This program is excellent. Whoever the leader is, whoever the president is, this is a program that must continue,” she said.
She noted that changes in students’ character are clearly visible through the intensive boarding-based mentoring system. Felipina also conveyed her appreciation directly to the President.
“To Mr. President, thank you very much. You have shown great sensitivity to the needs of the poor, especially those in East Nusa Tenggara. We feel that this program is truly extraordinary,” she said.
The government is also expanding the program through the construction of Phase II People’s Schools at more than one hundred locations.
Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo stressed that the development represents a long-term national investment.
“The People’s School is a tangible manifestation of the government’s commitment to building superior human resources. We will ensure that construction is fast and of high quality,” he said. (*)
