Preventing Provocation: Religious Leaders Urge Vigilance Against Infiltrators at the 212 Reunion

Jakarta — Various public figures from Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammadiyah, and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) are calling on the public to remain calm, mature, and vigilant in responding to plans for the 212 Reunion. They stress that vigilance is essential to preventing the presence of groups with vested interests who may attempt to infiltrate the event and divert its purpose into a platform for provocation, religious politicization, or acts of anarchy that could harm society at large.

NU figure KH Robikin Emhas emphasized that NU as an organization will not take part in the 212 Reunion if the event appears to promote religious politicization or any effort that could divide national unity. According to him, religious activities should be carried out sincerely and remain within a peaceful framework.

“Do not taint it with religious politicization, and do not allow yourselves to be pitted against one another,” he said.
He added that such actions not only harm the nation but also degrade the values of religion itself. For this reason, he urged NU members to act wisely, know their place, and avoid hate speech or actions that could trigger hostility.

A similar message was conveyed by Muhammadiyah figure Abdul Mu’ti, who reiterated that Muhammadiyah is not organizationally involved in the 212 Reunion. He stated that slogans such as “defending Islam,” often promoted in the event, are no longer relevant because political nuances overshadow religious messages. He reminded the public to remain rational and not easily provoked by narratives that may be used by certain groups for political purposes.

Deputy Chairman of MUI, Anwar Abbas, also urged all parties not to overreact to the issue of the 212 Reunion. He emphasized that every aspiration should be expressed ethically, without insulting or demeaning others. He stressed that maintaining public calm is crucial to preventing social tensions from escalating.

The calls from leaders across major religious organizations serve as a strong reminder that public vigilance is essential. The public is urged to stay calm, mature, and not easily swayed by provocation—especially by potential infiltrators who may attempt to turn the event into a space for conflict.

By maintaining this posture, the 212 Reunion is expected to remain peaceful, free from narrow interests, and committed to preserving unity among Muslims and national stability. (*)
