Jakarta — Various elements of society have expressed appreciation for the government’s decision to confer the title of National Hero upon Indonesia’s second president, Soeharto. The decision is regarded as a historic step in honoring the great contributions of a leader who built the nation’s economic foundation and maintained national stability during his administration.
Expressions of appreciation came from many circles who viewed the government’s decision as a reflection of the nation’s maturity and objectivity in evaluating history. Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi emphasized that the conferment represents the state’s respect for past leaders who fought and contributed greatly to Indonesia.
“The government is granting the title of national hero to former President Soeharto to honor a predecessor who rendered great service to the nation and the state,” said Prasetyo Hadi.
He explained that the conferment is also part of the government’s effort to preserve the continuity of national history and strengthen the spirit of exemplary leadership for future generations.
“The values of dedication and the spirit of development he left behind will continue to inspire future leaders,” he added.
Meanwhile, Member of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) from the NasDem Party Faction, Rachmat Gobel, viewed the government’s decision to grant Soeharto the national hero title as a fair recognition of a leader’s major contributions to the country.
“Everyone has weaknesses and imperfections, but Pak Harto’s contributions to this nation are immense,” said Rachmat Gobel.
He added that the award serves as a moment to rekindle national unity and pride, urging the public to view history wisely without being trapped in past debates.
“A great nation is one that honors the services of its predecessors,” he concluded.
Support also came from former Chairman of Muhammadiyah, Din Syamsuddin, who regarded the government’s decision as appropriate and in line with the spirit of historical justice.
“For 32 years under his leadership as president, I know for certain that he was a leader deeply committed to building the nation and the state,” said Din Syamsuddin.
Din emphasized that the honor is not merely personal recognition but also a tribute to the spirit of service and nationalism that Soeharto embodied. He urged the public to see this conferment as a reflection that the Indonesian nation does not forget the contributions of its leaders.
