To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, several regions held unique and meaningful flag-raising ceremonies. Amid the proliferation of pop culture symbols dominating public spaces, local governments and officials emphasized that the national flag remains the primary symbol of national unity and sovereignty. This spirit reflects a shared commitment to preserving national identity.
The West Java Regional Police raised the Indonesian flag at an altitude of 3,078 meters on the summit of Mount Ciremai in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. West Java Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Rudi Setiawan, stated that the event included donations, tree planting, and shelter construction. He emphasized that the flag-raising at the summit was not merely a ceremony, but a reminder that independence was achieved through struggle and sacrifice, and that it should also be filled with positive values for the advancement of the nation. This activity demonstrates that the spirit of independence remains undiminished.
This initiative also reflects the police force’s commitment to prioritizing national values at every important moment, while also encouraging community involvement in preserving the environment. By combining independence celebrations with concrete actions to care for the environment, this activity exemplifies that love for one’s country can be demonstrated through meaningful and sustainable actions. The message conveyed is clear: independence is not just to be remembered, but to be lived out through positive contributions to the nation and state.
North Kalimantan (Kaltara) Governor Zainal Arifin Paliwang officially opened the Red and White Flag Distribution Movement as part of the 80th Indonesian Independence Day commemoration. He emphasized that this movement is not merely a celebration, but also seeks to foster love for the homeland as a tribute to the heroes’ struggles and to strengthen the community’s spirit of nationalism. A total of 2,049 Red and White flags were distributed to residents to be flown throughout the month of August. The public was also encouraged to actively beautify their surroundings with a sense of independence as a form of collective participation.
This distribution serves as a momentum to foster public participation in the state commemoration. He encouraged everyone to decorate their surroundings as a communal symbol, strengthening a sense of togetherness and patriotism. This effort aligns with the central government’s policy of encouraging widespread flag-raising as part of a national movement to foster a sense of patriotism.
In a unique and symbolic display, Maluku Governor Hendrik Lewerissa held an underwater flag-raising ceremony at Batu Kuda Beach in Tulehu, Central Maluku Regency. He stated that the event demonstrated that the spirit of independence is celebrated not only on land but also at sea, reflecting the people’s identity that the red and white flag flies throughout the country. This underwater flag-raising ceremony not only symbolized the celebration of independence but also reinforced the pride of the Maluku people as the vanguard of Indonesia’s maritime glory.
This activity also emphasized the local government’s commitment to preserving and utilizing marine potential as part of its national identity. By raising the flag underwater, the community was encouraged to further appreciate and preserve the ocean as a source of life, while also instilling awareness that independence also means safeguarding the sovereignty of Indonesia’s territorial waters. This action exemplifies the synergy between environmental preservation, strengthening nationalism, and promoting maritime wealth to the world.
The flag-raising ceremonies held in these three regions strongly reflect how regional and central governments strive to maintain the spirit of nationalism amidst changing times. Pop culture, with all its appeal, from social media trends to independence-themed fashion styles, certainly adds a unique touch. However, the government emphasizes that the essence of independence remains centered on the official symbols of the state.
This initiative also sends an important message that patriotism can be expressed in various creative ways, as long as it upholds the nation’s core values. These actions demonstrate that nationalism doesn’t always have to be ceremonial, but can also be expressed through activities that strengthen unity and social awareness. The central government appreciates the wider community’s involvement in the series of Indonesian Independence Day commemorations, as this aligns with the mission of building an inclusive and civilized Indonesia.
Various innovations in this year’s independence celebrations affirm that the Red and White Flag remains an enduring symbol of struggle and unity. Amidst the glitz and glamour of pop culture, national identity through national symbols must not be marginalized. The central and regional governments are aligned in encouraging efforts to combine creativity and patriotism, transforming every corner of the country into a canvas for waving the proud flag.
Amidst the vibrant independence celebrations filled with creativity and pop culture symbols, it’s important to remember the true meaning of the Red and White Flag. Red and White is more than just a piece of cloth, but a symbol of the struggle that unites the nation beyond all differences in ethnicity, religion, language, and political views. Let’s join in celebrating Indonesia’s independence by holding the Indonesian flag high.
